Hi all,

Clarification required please!

I've been a doofus and bought a MSI RX480 8GB and just gone to install and realised my modular Hiper 580w PSU only had the 6 pin PCI-E plug.

Am i able to just buy an adaptor? If so could you recommend one from OCUK or is it new PSU time?

Thanks in advance

You must have had that PSU for a while now, I'd definitely pickup a newbie. Pop in you system specs and I'm sure you'll get some recommendations.

Around 7 years!

I've got the 8pack i5 6400 bundle but not overclocked it yet :o I want to though.
MSI RX480, 8GB
1x Crucial MX300 525gb SSD
8gb DDR 4 ram, 2400mhz
24" generic 1080p monitor.

No optical drives

'Hiper 580w PSU '

My advice bin that psu and buy a decent one as anything hiper branded should not be used with expensive computer components....

Especially if you are looking to overclock

As above, time to bin it now. You have a decent CPU, decent board and GPU, and that PSU, especially at 7 years old, is asking for trouble. Not to mention the PSU will no longer have warranty, so if it kills other components you aren't covered.

You don't really need an 850watt model if you only have one gpu, I just replaced my aged TX850 with a 650 watt EVGA G2, A decent 600 or 650 watt psu is ample.

Having said that the one you linked has a decent discount so grab it while you can.

That was my thought, i know the BQ are not the best range of EVGA lineup but will do me fine and gives me a little headroom for the future perhaps.

Apart from the fact that they explode the Hiper has a extremely weak 12v rail of only 360w so the sooner that is replaced the better.

The EVGA BQ series are built by HEC and reviews have shown them to be mediocre at best and have cheap internals. While it would be a step up from the Hiper it wouldn't be going anywhere near any pc of mine.

The EVGA Supernova GQ 650w is a very good psu at a reasonable price. It's gold rated and semi-modular and is a FSP built unit with the full 650w available on a single 12v rail. It has a 5 year warranty. Review here.

The Superflower Golden Green HX 750w is another quality semi modular psu. Built by Superflower themselves it is gold rated and has a single 12v rail of 744w and comes with a 5 year warranty.

If you don't mind hardwired cables the Superflower Platinum King 650w is on offer at the moment for a superb £70. It has a single 12v rail of 648w and has a 5 year warranty. Review here.

Here is a review of the 750W version:

Cap quality is actually decent for an HEC(!). Its not a bad PSU and JG scored it lowest for value since at RRP there are much better PSUs it appears. However, you got the 850W PSU for quite a decent price - it will be more enough for your system and it won't be pushed in your system.

However, that Superflow pastymuncher linked to is really decent for the price IMHO OFC.

Yeah i read some reviews and said too much at that price but for 50quid-ish thought it would be decent enough for my simple setup. WIll stick with it. Cheers all.

Edit - gone back up in price now it seems, got there in time though.

Blimey! A Hiper PSU still going?! Might be worth posting in here to bring it back from the dead:

(this was in response to this thread at the time: https://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17694588)

I had four Hiper PSUs ten years ago, each of which died a death, some quickly, some took a couple of years, but none lasted that long. Shame, I really liked the aesthetics of them, but turned out they spent all the money on design and boxes and didn't have any left for the internals.

Think you might have had that PSU longer than 7 years, Hiper went bust in August 2009.

As others have said, time to treat yourself to a nice, quality 500W-650W model as you'd be gutted if the Hiper takes out any of your nice kit when it blows.

EDIT - just noticed you've already ordered the EVGA, that'll do nicely IMHO. :)
