New Asus P7P55D-E motherboard, P5-760 CPU, Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 5570 and 8GB RAM from OcUK, fitted in existing case & PSU. Classic problem: power it on and nothing happens.

The green standby LED is lit but nothing happens when I press power-on. No front panel light, no other LEDs, and not a single fan moves. (I even removed the switch connector from the Mb and tried VERY CAREFULLY shorting the two Power On pins together, but still nothing).

I wonder if it's the power connectors. My existing PSU (Jeantech 500W) says "PCI Express" on the box so I thought it would be fine. It has a 20-pin power connector and a 4-pin connector on the same main cable, which together plug in to the 24-way EATXPWR connector. The motherboard User Guide says I must also connect the 8-pin EATX12V connector (which provides +12v to the graphics card), but my PSU has only 6- and 4-way plugs. I thought the 6-way would do the job - I read that the change to 8-way was a recent change to the spec, and is only needed for high end graphics cards - but now I wonder if that's why my system won't start. Especially as I'm not sure the plug pin shapes exactly match the first 6 ways on the motherboard.

Do I need an adaptor or a new PSU, or is there something else I should try?

(Hope it's OK to post this here, I didn't post in the OcUK Customer Service forum as I don't have an RMA, as I don't want to send it all back!).

Hi,
Have you got the 4 pin (or 8 pin) plugged into power socket by the cpu, without this the board will not boot.

No, I'd been trying the 6-way (I don't have 8), and the 4-pin plug didn't look like it would fit. Now tried the 4 again and realised it does fit if I rotate the cable. And it starts! Thanks!!!

But will 4 be enough to run the 5570, or do I need a 4->8 extender? I guess I'll find out when I plug everything else back in.

The 4 / 8 pin tends to be for the cpu rather than GPU, the GPU tends to have it's own power.

Just looked at my manual for the Gigabyte UD5 (X58) it recommends 8 pin for intle extreme processors so you will be fine with 4 :)
