Right guys feeling motivated with my weight loos , been counting calories and going well! You guy's and girl's seem to be good with advice!

So i want to buy a mountain bike and have a budget of £500 had a look about and the bikes with in my budget seem to be

VooDoo HooDoo (2013) - £460 with a nice discount this week!

Whistle patwin £480

Open to other suggestions within my budget! Does really need to deliver because of where i live unless its in Glasgow as a can get up there.

Thanks guys

If it's just for exercise you're much better off with a road bike as it's a lot easier to just go out for a ride each evening after work.

Where are you based?

Worth a visit to glasgow at least sit on a few bikes.

Got dales, alpine bikes, Evans at braehead, mcmartins/ freeflow on the south side. We have a shop in Cathcart with Clarkston cycle centre up the road.

Between the shops you're covered most big brands like specialized, giant, Scott, Marin and kona.

If you prefer mail order then go for the ubiquitous canyon.

Yeah well i'm going to be using this off road and a wee bit on 2mile cycle on road! But i would be able to do both with one bike and the voodoo has the remote lock out! thanks for the suggestion!

Based in dunoon, across the water from greenock well that's suit probably going up to glasgow soon anyway and ill have a wee look around!

I bought a cheap 'mountain bike' and i swear the suspension only added weight it didnt 'recoil' on bumps haha :P

thank you for the advice!

I was looking at the voodoo hoodoo 13/14 spec, didn't believe the claimed 14.1kg weight so took my digital luggage scales to an 18" which came out at just over 15kg. Few changes to previous spec inc coil forks add to weight.

Imo better bike than rockrider 8.1 if you don't mind weight and are happy with spec.

Just make sure you are being honest with yourself though.

I know too many people who have bought proper mountain bikes for general riding or commuting with the intention of riding them off-road, but never do, so at the end of the day they would have been far better suited to a road or hybrid bike.

Yea tru dat. But I still need 140-150mm travel as dropping off 160mm kerbs occasionally can be very challenging.

You missed the extra £40 off which ended yesterday bringing the comp in at £581 with quidco or the team in at £650. Or the mx down to £440.

The mx is a good bike for the money.

I've just bought a rockrider 8.1. Done 20 miles on it today in Delamere. Brilliant bike, took some abuse. Only bad thing I can say about it is the Michelin tyres it comes with are a bit rubbish in the muddy stuff.

Thought about going second hand?

I picked up a Spec Pitch Pro 2009 for £600, to be fair that was a bargain. But I'm so glad I did, would never get anywhere near that kind of spec for the price. Would go second hand again happily.

+1 for second hand. Can get some bargains. People want to get into biking and splash 1k+ on a bike then couple months later they realise they cba and need the cash :D

Yea I almost did but got a hybrid with 700cx35c tyres instead and I'm so glad I did and can only imagine how horrible fat bulky tyres are on roads speed wise.

I can drive on grass and dirt trails fine obviously I can't do jumps etc but then a budget mtb likely won't handle much anyway
