I think this is probably a valid thread, even without the current loss of search ;)

I'm trying to determine a good set of tyres for my 2001 Mondeo Estate (2.0 petrol) to replace the dying Pirelli P6000's which I've always hated.

I've got Eagle F1's on my Fiesta, but I think I'd prefer something slightly more biased towards longer life and better wet stopping, rather than the pure performance of the F1. On the other hand, I don't want to sacrifice ALL the fun :)

I'm tending to be loyal to Goodyear, seeing as the F1's have been so good. Consequently, I'm looking at:

205/55/r16

Hydragrips, Excellence, NCT5, or Vector EV2.

It's really difficult to find comprehensive information about the differences between them all, but they're all fairly similar in price. Does anyone have any positive or negative experiences or comments about any of these?

I've got a set of NCT5's on my vectra and the only bad thing is you get a bit of squeal in the dry otherwise they seem good and I drive like I drive my van.. show no fear..

You say that, but I'm finding my current set of excellence better than I found my hydragrips, granted its a different car, but the hydragrips were only "great" in uber-wet conditions, the excellence seem a better allrounder.

/shocker in LCR with non "performance" tyre.

Had NCT5's on my GTi6 when I bought it Sept 2004. I still had two on them up until last week

Seemed to perform ok too, gave them hell :p

Lol - thanks for the replies so far. Just demonstrates the issues I had to begin with though - there still doesn't seem to be any particular differentiation between each of these tyres. People have had good experiences with all of them?!

Eagle F1: High performance tyre. Aimed at performance car - absolute grip at the expense of longevity

Hydragrip: Wet focused regular car tyre - excellent in the wet, good longevity

Excellence: Touring tyre - focused on ride quality, longevity, road noise etc

NCT5: All rounder

Got a new set of Eagle F1s on the front (waiting for the Bridgestones on rear to wear out) and they seem great for the price. Better than the Avons ZZ3s on there before.

Okay, a pair of Hydragrips are in the bag. I'll report back once they're on and tested.

(Couldn't resist a new pair of F1-GSD3s at the same time for the Fezza :D )

I have four Hydragrips on my Mondeo estate. I am worried by the rate at which they are wearing for my relatively normal driving. Unless it's normal for tyres to wear down initially this quick? (about 3-4mm in 5000miles) This is the first time I have bought 4 new ones.

I have the NCT 5 all round on my car cant fault them good grip in wet and dry conditions and are lasting well still plenty of meat on them. Not that expensive to buy either.

NCT 5's here too.
I've got 2 @ 2 months old and 2 @ 1 month old.
Doing their job just fine and as somebody else said, extremely well priced if you shop around.
