hi

i am going to build my first gaming rig, i have saved up a lot of money for this so i dont want to wreck anything up.

so far my rig is:
-coolmaster haf x(case)
-intel i7 2600k (im going to overclock hopefully)
-asus maximus iv extreme (b3) (only dual channel ram supported and single pci-ex16 so no crossfire/sli with x16 but with x8 pci)
-corsair ax1200 psu
-asus hd5970 ares (might overclock) or new gtx590/amd 6990
for ram should i use corsair vengeance 16gb ddr3(9-9-9-24 latency at 1600mhz)
or corsair dominator GT 8gb ddr3 or g-skill ripjaw x 16gb F3-17600CL9Q-16GBXLD (CL 9-11-9-28-2N 1.65V @ 2200mhz)
i read somewhere the new i7 not that good with ram over 1600mhz is that true.

and lastly is it a good idea to go with water cooled or air cooled?

thanks in advance :-)

(sidenote: does anybody have a clue when the new gtx590 or hd6990 coming out in uk thanks)

A 1200w PSU for a 2600k and a high end graphics card? A 1200w PSU is for like high end overclocking and tri/quad SLI/crossfire. You can run two 580s off a 850w.

750W ;) A decent 650W could even cope - although I wouldn't recommend it.

RAM wise it depends on the cooling.

Water will be much much more expensive but quieter and cooler - makes upgrade harder and more expensive though. If you go with watercooling I would get the Dominator. There isn't much point in RAM with speeds over 1600MHz as it offers plenty headroom for overclocking as it is.

If you get air, you'll have to get low profile ram such as GeIL Value Plus 1600MHz or Corsair XMS3 1600MHz

I assume that this rig will be for gaming seeing as you have a HD5970 in there? If so there is no point to the i7 as it offers very little performance over the i5 for a much high price.

HD6990 and GTX590 are coming out within the next week apparently - worth waiting for those.

yh i have a very high budget as i have been saving for a long time like £3k.
and i think i will go for air cooling. as for i7 i got it free from family, they got two so took the other. and the 1200 psu is for if i do want to sli or crossfire in the future its kinda future proofing.

so which ram should i go for? im not going to over clock the ram, but they all seem good to me.
thanks

ok, thanks for that geil looks pritty impressive, i dont know why i havent heard of them, lot of people saying very reliable and value for money. but the motherboard(e-atx) and case look big enough to have the dominators in there(50/50 with fan). if say money nver matterd what would be best.( many people have also suggest g-skill ripjaw x series to me?)

thanks

Yeah, C8 or C7 spec G.Skill RipJawX would be epic :)

Also, GeIL have only just made a comeback from military and private sectors - might be why you haven't heard of them? But a few years ago they were regarded as the best

They both are. The first one has massive heardspreaders so will run at higher voltages (useful for overclocking) - however, I doubt it will fit under any air coolers properly :p

This is the G.Skill I would get if you needed 8GB.
