nothing's changed since last night, it connected to the internet perfectly

i switch it on and spyware doctor says that it's encountered a problem and needs to be restarted but will not restart

norton (either antivirus, personal fire wall or live update) says that TCP/IP is not installed

LAN connection says there is limited or no conectivity (that's a cable LAN not wireless) and also says that the computer did not assign an IP address

the computer connectes directly to a netgear router, the other computer connected to it (this one) works fine

does anyone have any idea what the hecks going wrong? the only differance between the 2 computers is that the one that isn't working connects directly via a cable and the other coneects wirelessly. both computers are virtualy identical, just basic athlon XP setups on gigabyte mobos.

come on guys! you're usualy great at this stuff

anyway, i've run thru this little checklist i found on the symantec website

Clickity here!

but it still wont work, you know it looks like i'm going to be doing a full reinstall if i cant get this working, which i dont want to do i'm too tired to format on a monday! all i need is some sort of quick fix, i just cant be bothered backing up the hundereds of files i've got x_x

on the pc cuasing the problem. close down norton, see if this fixes the problem. if not

click on start, then go to 'run' type 'cmd' press enter. type 'ipconfig /all' press enter, copy and paste the info back into here. like this ...

ok, problam solved! i downloaded this little IP repair tool

Winsock and TCP Repair tool

VB_Winfix 1.2

all it does is restor corrupt registry keys ^.^ thanks for you help dudes, now i'm going to remove my personal infomation from my previous post

next thing to do would have been to put in the TCP/IP info manually. Ive seen removing mcafee seems to kill the DHCP client service in XP :-/
