I am try to get together a new PC to build, I was going for a MSI B450 Tomahawk Max with a Ryzen 5 3600, Is it now better for me to wait for a B550 or get a 570x with the new 330 AMD chip (saving money on the chip but spending more on the MOBO), was looking to upgrade the chip in about 12 - 18 months anyway but want something that will still be current in a few years, last time I built a PC was about 8 yrs ago (I know dont shame me!) Im dont want to throw money at it now as not working is taking its toll on my budget.
Whats best to do?

If you intend on upgrading to a 4000 series then don't get a B450, I have a B450 Tomahawk Max with a 2600x. I will likely go to a 3900x or something in 12mths when the 4000 series comes out and pushes the price down and a 3900x realistically will last me a good while. If you can save a little longer or cut the budget elsewhere then go for an x570 now then at least you know you are set for a good while.

What is your budget?

At the moment the budget is way over what I expected to pay (the Mobo was £90 2 months ago, £129 now due to import failures etc covid etc) thats why Im glad I held off, everything else im well accounted for just the MOBO & CPU are a problem, do I spend more on a X570 & less on a chip! comes to the same sort of money but in a different way

Looking at roughly a £50 difference in the motherboard?
The tomahawk is avaliable elsewhere for £20 less than OCUK btw, so do a bit of hunting around before you purchase.

It really does depend if you have any intention of moving to 4000 series, a 3600 is likely to last you a good while if you break it down for what you need. I would go for a b450 and 3600 which is a solid platform, wait for the 4000 series to come out and see what the prices are like and also what the next generation of motherboards bring in terms of features etc then upgrade if you really want to.

Would you want to get a 4000 series CPU and be on a motherboard generation that is over two years old?

Will the B450 last another 2 yrs? with the 550 coming out (one of those annoying 'inbetweeners' is it worth the £50 extra for the mobo? Im am quite flexible on the prices (and I have about 6 places I check prices on) but dont want to waste unnecessary money I dont need to! 8 yrs down the line my PC is struggling to play games now, used to be a mad gamer but not so much now a few titles I like to play, World War Z, City Skylines, Doom (got my eye on that) PUBG just games and general surfing, no vid editing etc

Tomahawk Max and normal versions have had their prices inflate so much, even more weaker pound and outbreak !
Should be £90 .

Gigabyte UD/Gaming X for £150 will do the job or wait for b550 in June

Also, city skylines can eat up ram ! Easily with mods - ask @tamzzy

Thanks, I know the ram issues with Skylines going for 32gig
What chip? if I can afford it shall I stick with the Ryzen5 3600 or one of the newer ones

To be honest, saving some cash since cities is optimised for 4 cores but will use more threads well .

Ryzen 3100 + b450 Toma + 32GB or ram and a better GPU ! Not sure which one your thinking but least 8GB of VRam !!!

Slap in Ryzen 12 core in 2 yes time if needs be or 8 core 3700x second hand

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £775.02 (includes shipping: £11.10)

Dead set on making core system last for long period with CPU upgrade . X570 with 3100 4 core 8 thread for next 18 months , then Zen3 8/10 cores which should equal current Ryzen 12 core or go nuts with Ryzen 9 4*** 12+ cores etc
Better ram that in theory can be overclocked to 4000hz which new Ryzen should easily be able to use

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £886.06 (includes shipping: £11.10)
