Hi all, just got back off holiday and started to download all my images to my mac and I've found one of my SanDisk Ultra CF 4Gb is reporting as unformatted/format not recognised. Whatever has occurred has only happened in the last hour as I quickly checked all cards before starting the import and I could see images on all cards.

Any ideas on next steps, software recovery options?

Rather peeved off at the mo now.

Is this on a card reader?

Can the camera see the pictures? If so, is it an option to download through the camera (presumably not through mass storage, but if MTP is an in-camera option it should work).

http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk_6.14_Release is what I've used successfully on several occasions, most recently with a misbehaving Corsair flash drive which is now in the bin.

I played with this last night (although not the latest beta), it was weird because as I watched the recovery directory I would see it very briefly it create the missing CR2 files (finder would also preview and display image size) but then they would disappear/be replaced by a tiny text type file (all split second).

Annoyingly it proves some of my data is still on the card, just can't get the images off it at the moment. :(

A week or so ago I had to recover quite a few photographs from a corrupted USB stick. I created a thread in the Windows Software subforum

http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18456124&highlight=username_andy90

KIA posted a link to some software that is available as a demo version. It is the sixth post down.

Althought the demo allows you to recover files, the batch recovery is disabled, but by viewing each file in a Photo editor, I was able to view and save them. It took quite a while but it worked.

If you can see the files then you should be ok

I think you should avoid the recovery option. There should be an option to list files and then to copy files (testdisc will copy them to somewhere in your c drive I cant remember where)

from the first options select:

no log
then select the card from the list of all your drives
then intel pc format
analyze
quick search
Yes when it asks about Vista
then P to list files
then you can go down the list pressing C on the file you need

I hope that works

Thanks for the suggestions, I've tried all of the above and others with no success.

Even where is was briefly showing the files and then deleting no longer occurs. Photorec scans the card within a few seconds and just states nothing found.

Tried testdisc and that couldn't find/recover any partitions.

Well and truly fed up with it now as I had some lovely family pics on it. :(

Do you have a linux distro you can boot into?

If so mount the CF card and DD the entire image onto a file.

Then use scalpel to physically go through the ones and zeros cutting out files with CR2 headers and footers.
