Hi,

I need a new CPU Cooler. I was using a Tuniq tower 120 silent cooler and I liked it, but its not so silent now after two years of near 24/7 use. I would have bought another one of those but OC don't have them now, and they don't seem to have any decent Tuniq ones.

I don't want a watercooling solution ( to complicated for me to fit) But I would like one that spits out as little noise as possible.

The range of coolers is just overwhelming, I simply don't know where to start.

Can anyone suggest something decent. Not massively expensive but not cheap n nasty either.

Thanks for any advice

agree it the fans making the racket not the cooler. Take of the cooler give it a good wash, search for a nice quiet 120mm or even 140mm fan re apply some new thermal paste and your ready to go for another 2 years :)

Hi,

Its mildly dusty, but not to bad actually. I wasnt aware the fan could be removed/replaced. I just tried that and cant get the fan to come off. Software wise Im ok, hardware Im a total amateur. But still, the thing does look Ok and I thought it would be a shame to throw it away...precious metals n all that :)

For now I have slotted in the stock intel that came with the CPU but it does spit out less noise than the Tuniq was. But I also know the Tuniq was much quieter that the stock Intel one when it was running optimum.

I have an Intel core 2 quad Q6600

I was thinking about going for a
Prolimatech Megahalems Rev B CPU Cooler (Socket 775/1156/1366)

I will keep the tuniq and look in to getting a new fan for it (if this is possible) an dkeep it for a second PC I may build up. But Im looking to order some PC bits asap as theres some other maintenance stuff I need to buy such as a new Graphics card and case fan. I might as well get all the bits at the same time. Im no good at all with repairing hardware, changing fans etc. Yes, Im a total amateur

Edit:
On looking at it again there is actually more dust than I thought. On the cooler vents theres quite a bit. But again I just cant seem to work out how the fan would be removed. Its not a regular philips screwdriver type deal. Do I just pull the thing off?

AFAIK the Tuniq Tower 120 is still highly rated.

As others have stated, just give it a good clean & maybe change the fan. A few PWM ones commercially available.

For cleaning, maybe use this.

The Megahalems is a fantastic cooler when coupled with good airflow fans.

I have an i7 @ 4ghz.

I have just gone back to the Megahalems after a brief spell with water and I am getting better idle temps with the Megahalems than water (high 30's, low 40's), load temps are higher than on water, but not by much (low 70's).
I know water does give better temps so I think I must have done something wrong with my setup.

I am using 2 x 120mm Scythe Jyuni fans and they move fantastic amounts of air, and I have them set to around 900rpm using a fan controller.

Use a good thermal paste e.g Artic Silver 5, and follow artics application methods an their website and you won't go far wrong.

I don't think there are many better air coolers for the money.

yeah just sounds like just need to change the fans on your tuniq, akasa apache are pretty good quiet fans

If you want completely silent though, I suggest thermalright HR-02 passive cpu cooler, does not need a fan :) , and getting some good reviews, cant wait for mine

Any one know if akasa apache or Gentle typhoon (1850 & 1450 rpm) would be quieter?

The Apaches are very nice fans by all accounts, however the GTs are also very well regarded and work well through heatsinks.

I don't own either type if fan but I understand the GT has a less annoying noise when running and that they do gave dome issues when undervolting. If you intend using speed control you might want to consider this. The apache is a PWM fan and can be controlled by your mobo.

When I do buy some new fans I will probably go for the GTs.

Ah Cheers, I am still looking since one of my other posts a few weeks back.... been trying to source the best, quietest fan is a very hard and subjective thing! I really need 3 or 4 fans:

1x front intake, 1 x rear exhaust & either:

1 x to replace titan fenrir heatsink or 1x to put onto zalman flex or put 2x on the zalman flex.

So frustrating spending hours figuring this stuff out :)

I am lucky enough to have a speed controller from the akasa evo120 i have laying around so if I dont get a pwm fan I could use that. BUT I would rather run which ever fans I buy at full speed and pray they are quiet enough :D

I have got both. And I find the akasa apache quieter Than the GT 1450

That'll be no doubt because the Apache is 1300rpm where the GT is 1450rpm.

Any fan that moves will make a noise, it's just a matter of how much you are willing to out up with.

I use 2x Noctua NF-P12 on my cooler and highly recommend them but they are a bit ugly and still make too much noise for me at stock speed (1300), fortunately they come with Low noise resistors. Expensive though.

Well, I find the freezer 64 pro 92mm fan at 2200rpm (& according to frosty tech review the fan is about 50db), this is find 'just' about tolerable. tbh if its any bit quieter than this, it will be perfect for me.

So really, which would be better for case fans and which would be better for heatsink with static air pressure. I was going to get all the same fans as this would keep the 'tone' the same.

I think the 1200rpm akasa blue emp fan sold at ocuk is silent at 1200rpm -http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=FG-036-AK&groupid=701&catid=57&subcat=4

looks dont bother me, i have an elite 335 case, simple yet stylish enough for me.
