Hey guys,

Looking to get a new car for about £6k, maybe £7k tops. Am torn between the following:

Mazda 3MPS mk1
Seat Leon fr mk2 (can't find decent cupra for my budget)
Clio 197

Any other suggestions welcome. My requirements:

Only travel 7k miles a year
Petrol
Mpg not an issue
Insurance band not an issue
Hatchback either 2 or 4 door, don't really like big saloons
Moderately quick, 170bhp+
Under 45k on the clock
No older than 6 years

Cheers guys

out of those i would have the MPS just because you dont see many of them.

MX5? it doesn't meet your 170hp criteria but they are a lot of fun to drive. Depends if you want rear seats or not though?

I bought a mk1 MPS a few weeks back. Lots of fun when the turbo kicks in. I've seen one other on the road since and it looked like the other driver also thought " another 3MPS!".

Another vote for the MPS. I enjoyed the 2.0 Sport version I had, the 2.3T engine would have made it very very fun. Cabin is comfortable and it was very practical, overall a good thumbs up.

Mazda and Seat = Effortlessly fast turbo driving style, pretty refined and resonable handling.

Renault = Really have to work hard to get the best from it but ultimately the better driving experience, but no-where near the others in terms of refinement.

I'm driving a non-turbo 2.3 Mk1 Mazda 3 at the moment as a pool car and it's not nearly as good a car as I hoped it would be. Granted it's an auto, but even then there is fairly comedic torque steer and there is a ridiculous amount of road noise from the tryes. The seats are good though. I'd probably lean towards the Renault personally.

weren't these only available in America?

Edit: Never mind, you're in Australia

I have the same engine in Mazda 6, its not very good to be honest, runs out of steam quite quickly but its quite responsive low down, maybe I'm just to used to VTEC engines

I'd go for the MPS but I'd probably drive the Seat just in case

Thanks for the replies guys, I do like the exclusivity of the MPS, very understated as well. What I like most is that's a complete sleeper, no one would expect anything of it at thr lights! Just need to find one for the right price, hopefully my budget will stretch far enough.

I've had a Mazda 3 Sport for almost two weeks now, really liking it. Road noise as mentioned above is certainly noticeable at times but it doesn't really bother me to be honest. Good equipment level for its class/price too. I'm happy with the performance so I can only imagine how the MPS feels.
