Title says it all :(

Just delidded my 3570k.... used a razor, as no vices were to be had. Thought I was pretty careful, tho there were one or two nicks on the pcb. Everything back in, and computer goes thru an endless reboot cycle now. Nothing comes up on the monitor. Just switches on and fans spin up for a few seconds, and then reboots... Could I have killed my processor somehow?

Depends what TIM you used and If they were coming into contact with the TIM itself. Or if they were deep enough to cause the issues.

When my cpu was dead that's what mine did. Try basic steps first, re-seat cpu, 1 stick ram, reset cmos.

Take the cpu out and give everything a good clean. Clean all the contact pads with isopropyl alcohol, incase there was TIM on there. And check the socket for debris or damage.

Do you have speaker for mobo?

As above give it a try. If not take out the CPU and look closely at the PCB and see if you cut any of the tracers.

For deliding has anyone tried using dental floss?

Thanks guys. Will give that all a go tmrw. TIM is thermal grizzly on die and on IHS, so shouldn't be an issue. Yeah, think I've got an old pc speaker somewhere now you mention it - hopefully some beep codes will give me a clue.

I killed my 3570k a while ago using the razor blade method.

Similar behaviour to you. Pressed button, fans came on, that's it. (edit, mine didn't reboot though, fans just spun forever with nothing else happening)

If you can see copper in the "few nicks", then its pretty much game over.

On the plus side, I'm really enjoying my 4790k lol.

Er yeah.. just found a rather deep nick with copper brightly peering out. Oh ****. Wasn't budgeting on anything new right now. My bad  Over to the bay for a replacement...

You'll be alright. I shed a tear after killing mine, but time is a great healer lol.

Grab a 2600k / 2700k and you can tell yourself you got an upgrade too, that always helps.

what's the plan then OP? you going to go with a 2nd hand sandy i7? It would probably cost you the same as a 2nd hand ivy i5, moar threads, better clocks (probably) and you wont be tempted to delid again in the future lol.

Bad points are no USB3 or PCIe3, but that's not really that important.

Why not i heard sandys delid really easy :D

Shame bout your cpu though, always a risk when delidding. I would be interested to know how you managed to take a chunk out of the PCB though, ive seen a few people saying they did this. Are you using the straight edge and working it under, or are you sticking the pointy end in there or summat?

Im looking forward to a few years time when i need to upgrade this thing, cause i wanna try the dental floss method now.

Well, if your interested in my story as well, the problem was that I used shaving razors rather than "Stanley" blades. I stupidly took the advice of some random dude on youtube. Maybe had I used a Stanley blade my 3570k would still be running, maybe not, but who cares because I replaced it with a 2600k that got replaced by a 4790k lol.

Just takes a blow torch, a vice and some mole grips :D

Please expand, my spec is in my sig and I'm sure my USB 3.0 works.

Only fools use razor blades. Problem is they actually taper to be too thick. Which makes it too stiff (no give). The wedge / diamond shape acts something like a force multiplier.

You could have used some thin shim metal scraps, 0.1mm thin. Or as others have said, tried some decent floss. There are different thicknesses / strengths available. Those materials don't have such a tendancy to dig into the PCB at an off angle. They will just bend themselves instead harmlessly... razor blades certainly don't do that.

I just use a cheap thin breakable box cutter knife. Its about 1/3 the thickness of a stanley blade and long enough so the tip never goes anywhere near the PCB, ive never scratched the board, but i have knocked some caps off last time i did it by rushing.

Sorry to here of your loss OP :(
For future referance I've always used a NEW stanley blade to do mine and never had a problem on the 6 i've done. I always rock the blade on the corners first, then push through from one corner to the next, you should never use the point of the blade to run down the sides as thats asking for trouble.

Edit: after each incission always check the blade for any nicks, if you suspect any then get a new blade.
