HELP, do i need to reinstall xp for mobo upgrade

hey guys

i have my new mobo and RAM sitting on the bench here, and im capable of installing everything on hte hardware side of things.
but the software beats me?

ive never REPLACED a working mobo in my life, ive read an old thread that says i have to reinstall windows ! this isnt really an option!

ive googled all day for guides, but theyre all guides for new builds

my NEW spec is in the sig, the mobo and RAM inthere at tho moment is an asrock 775dual 880 PRO
in a nut shell do i have to uninstallt he mobo drivers or summit ? then do it juist like a GPU or summit ?

whats this about reinstalling XP? ( xp PRO sp2)

I would go for a new fresh install, format the drive etc.
If you boot with installation disc in the cd it *should* start the installation itself.
I'm sure there are loads of guides out there...google for new windows xp installation or something

i found one, but it mensioned something about an XP repair ?
i think it involved putting the CD in, and selecting REPAIR instead of install.

man i really REALLY dont want to reinstall XP. it dakes me all week to put all my progs back on

what will happen if i connect her up and turn it on ?

I would do a fresh install. If you don't want to do it yourself you could get friend to do it (give them say £30 for their trouble)

If you just switch it on from the old system it might boot (before you pull everything apart uninstall all drivers - chipset, videocard, soundcard etc- from the machine and shutdown- but it'll take search for new hardware and it'll display non working hardware (or might remove them) It might work, but it might be unstable also. You won't do any harm, but by the time you've messed around with searching for new hardware you would've just done a fresh install anyway.

Why does it take you a week? I can do a fresh XP SP2 slipstream install, updates, drivers, software and getting Windows preferred look in about 3 hours. Whilst it's doing something which takes a while (installing, updates, defragmenting etc) I do something else.

well because i have tons to install. loads of programs eetc, im still installing off the last one .
i suppose its just the "I WANT IT NOW" syndrome.
the DVDs are on the desk, and the windows CD in next to it.
time to back up fellas

but first of all... im gonna do a few hunred benchmarks lol
thanks guys. suppose a fresh install will be better in the long run.

how has x64 come along lately ? are the drivers still as impossible to get ?

64-bit drivers are available, but nowhere near the availability of 32-bit.
I would stick with 32-bit for now.
You will find that a whole new install would work MUCH better than a repair.
It takes me ages to re-install all my stuff, but still make sure it's backed up and the go for it. I have a copy of the network install of SP2, and most of the updates which saves a lot of time. If you can slipstream SP2, even better! I also use MCE 2005 as it contains a lot of updates with your valid Xp key.

Someone here wrote a guide on how to attempt new mobo with total re-install.

That looks fairly good, tho it will be different from PC to PC.

The minus to doing it like that is a small chance you run into probs, and have to re-format and loose the lot.

Does make you wonder whether all the time spent in the above may be as well spent doing a fresh install, but again that will depend on how much you have.
If you choose the above option back up all your critical data!

and there was me thinking that it was just a case of swapping it over
well im backing up now, quicker than i though
and im just going with a fresh install of xp pro, not x64 i dont want the hasstle of driver searching again lol

Rick, the method in that guide will work if you want to do a quick job.
Try that first, and if you need a new install, go for it!
