Hello OcUK,

Long story short. The missus has gone, giving me a rare chance at a gaming evening. I really fancy playing my old copy of Fallout 3 but it won't run.

It will open the launch app but it won't let me start the game. I've downloaded the latest update from the official website but I still just get this error:

The application was unable to start correctly (0xc0000005).

It worked fine on my old rig but I think there is a problem with modern CPU and this game. I have a 2600k. I've tried the below along with compatability mode and several re-installs.

Find the line: bUseThreadedAI=0
Change it to: bUseThreadedAI=1
Add another line after it and insert: iNumHWThreads=2

Google has been exausted and I'm out of ideas.

If someone brings a fix to me quickly, saving my evening, I'll send you a game via steam. I have a few gifts on there inc. LFD2, Limbo and PvZ.

I'm using an onboard sound card and the driver was downloaded and installed about 2 weeks ago.

My GTX570 is running stock, no afterburner and only one screen.

Tried Uninstalling and reinstalling :p? The vanilla game worked fine for me on an overclocked 2500k even without the multi-thread mod.

Also try re-installing Graphics drivers and removing any other drivers such as sound drivers and let windows install the default drivers.

Another cause for this error I've found online is faulty RAM, so try running the game with only one stick of RAM installed and if it doesn't work take it out and try another single stick of RAM.

Yes it's on steam. That was one of the first things I tried. I've tried everything suggested here, still no luck. :(

I doubt it is a problem that one of the usual fixes can help with tbh(multi-core fix that you tried, ffdshow fix etc), as they all have very specific crashes that happen in-game, for example, the ffdshow fix is specifically for freezing during gameplay, and multi-core fix stops random crashing. This seems like a possible installation error?..or compatibility problem.

Hope you get it sorted.

Edit- Don't some Bethesda games have some kind of a problem with UAC settings?...might be worth exploring.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys, unfortunately I'm still unsuccessful, so have decided to start HL2 downloading and I'll get my nostalgia fix from there.

Sadly mate, Fallout 3 is an awful, awful port. I've had this issue and haven't managed to fix it in over a year. I've had mobo and CPU/GPU swaps since and it still persists, tried everything Google suggests like yourself and nothing. Bethesda really should be taken to court and forced into fixing all of the millions of issues 3 has on PC.

Delete everything in the folder in Documents/My Games/Fallout3 except your save games.

I'll bet you 50p it'll work after that. :)

Man, I had that exact same problem with my New Vegas and a bunch of its DLCs, and I haven't played it since.

Messaged Steam support and posted in the troubleshooting forums but got no help whatsoever. Hope one of these fixes works :)
