Hello, I have a Supermicro SYS-E200-8D server with the above CPU. The socket is FCBGA 1667.

Space is at an extreme commodity! The stock heatsink is a bit of aluminium without fan and doesn't cool the CPU very well. To make matters worse, I've replaced the incredibly loud stock fans with 3x Noctua items which are fixed at 5000 rpm, and although whisper silent, if I start to hammer the CPU, temperatures reach 100 very quickly.

I'm looking for either 3 replacement 40mm 4 pin fans which are quieter than the stock vacuum cleaner levels ones, or a copper based HSF which would fit and help out.

Thanks.

5000rpm and whisper silent? 500 perhaps?

Were the temps the same with the very loud stock fans?

Is there a mesh/filter etc, between the fans and the outside world? If it's 5000rpm, and whisper quiet, which fans :D, if it's 500, then whilst they may be whisper quiet, they're probably not actually doing anything, and without airflow, any cooler will struggle.

Yes to both - silent and 5000 rpm. They are Noctua NF A4X20 FLX fans. There's the chassis mesh but not filter, however the server is tiny, 43mm high I think and there's 4 DIMMS, a 6 core XEON plus two SSDs to cool. I didn't have the original fans in for long as they're pretty loud even at their lowest setting.

Missed the fact they're 40mm :D.

Do you still have the stock ones? I'd test it with those, and see what the temps are like, just for comparison purposes.

Do you have 43mm clearance, or 43mm total height?

Yes I have the stock ones still. I'll have another look next week. I'd say there's no more than 38-40mm in terms of height.

We have a paradox. Isn't your case only about 193x226x43mm? So even though your Xeon is only 35w TDP it's going to be hard to cool in such a small space. I suspect an all copper heatsink would help. Copper is 380-390 W/m K while aluminium is 204-210 W/m k below 100c.

I may try a copper heatsink plus the normal fans but with voltage reducers on them.
How tall is the cooler? If you can get 12mm clearance, a slim fan might do it. While they're pretty feeble on their own, compared to no family will be loads of airflow. I have a 40mm x 12mm fan running off USB 5V to cool an Atom that used to be passive. It's really just moving the air off the heatsink, and does the job great.

I know it's only 43mm tall, but maybe put fan on side of cooler.
Keep in mind this system is only 7.6x8.9x 1.7 inches in size.
Maybe mod the case so it's open end to end or side to side and put fans on one end or side to push air through case.

What is air temp around unit? What is air temp into fans? Every degree warmer the air in translates to almost the same degrees hotter component will be. ;)

I think I found a copper HSF but it didn’t make a huge difference. I ended up selling the lab setup and moving to something with more space.
