Help finding a new 120 Hz 23''-24'' gaming monitor (hoping to order soon)

Hello guys and girls.

I have lately been reading up, and probably used between 60-80 hours reading different threads :p

I have now done a few conclusions that has made my choice a bit easier, as I now am down to four (or mabye two) monitors. I was first looking at the Dell U2410, Dell U2311H and HP ZR24W, but as I am a fast paced gamer (read: probably 90-95 % FPS gaming) I have decided that a 120Hz is probably the best bet for me.

So now to the monitors:
  1. BenQ XL2410T + Zowie Bundle (~ £424)
  2. Asus VG236HE (~ £363)
  3. LG W2363D (on sale atm ~ £245)
  4. Alienware OPTX AW2310 (~ £500)

After doing all this research, I am mainly set on either the BenQ XL2410T or the Asus VG236HE. I have heard that BenQ is the faster of the two (which is a big + in my book), but that a lot of people have had problems with bleeding (could this have been a bad batch?). I have also heard the default settings are BAD, but I guess this is an "easy" fix? I have almost decided on the BenQ, but I just want to see what people have to say.

Just a quote from another forum:
People who say the BenQ is bad are looking at the out of box presets (which are pretty bad). Read tftcentral's review, it's pretty accurate.

Don't get the Asus. The BenQ is better in almost every way. LED backlighting gives the BenQ some of the best blacks of any monitor, not just any 120hz. I sell a lot of monitors and it's really easy to see that the XL2410T is one of the best TN screens out there. The colors are decent but of course it's TN tech, but good blacks and exceptional contrast actually make games look wonderful. I use an IPS U2711, and I find myself using the BenQ more.

I don't really care too much about the price difference as I am already using about 3000 quid on the other parts and around 1100 quid on water cooling.

I hope someone can help me in my choice, as I have now been going back and forward between monitors (and computerparts) for about two months or so

(And before anyone say anything about the prices, I am Norwegian, and those are the Norwegian prices :()

Thanks in advance
Espen Andreassen :)

Hi there,

For your uses I would suggest the LG - it's the cheapest, has zero input lag (when using the through mode), is very responsive and uses a matte (non-reflective) screen.

That said, the 27in 120Hz 1080p Acer HN274H is supposed to start shipping next month for £500 (at least in the UK). Considering you budget and uses, perhaps it is worth waiting to see how this monitor does in reviews. From my experience switching between a 24in 1920x1200 monitor and a 27in with the same res - I find the 27in much more immersive when playing games and personally don't find the larger pixels to be an issue.

Hmm, I was hoping to order today tbh. I have been going back and forward for months, and find myself waiting for new things every time. If I keep on doing this I will never get to order my computer :p

Are you sure I should acctually go for the LG W2363D if you look away from the price? From my findings it is behind both the Asus and the BenQ, hmm

Any thoughts? My understanding:

BenQ XL2410T:
Seems that it was overhyped when it came out. Colors are awful out-of-the-box, but (a bit) better after calibration. It seems to be really fast, but beaten by the LG W2363D (also Samsung and Viewsonic). Seems to have the best stand out of the 120Hz monitors. Been a lot of people complaining about backlight bleeding on this monitor, but not sure if this is because of a bad batch.

Asus VG236HE:
From my understanding it's the best monitor at 3D (along with Alienware OPTX AW2310). It also seems to have the best colors out of all the 120Hz monitors, but at the cost of being slower. People keep on talking about its glossy screen, but from users this does not seem to be a problem. Stand in the middle of the three monitors.

LG W2363D:
From my research it is the fastest out of the three and is therefor the best bet for 2D fast paced gaming. It seems to have the worst stand out of the three monitors. The colors are not as good as the Asus VG236HE out-of-the-box, but from my reading is not too bad after some calibration (mabye not as good as the Asus though).

I keep on going back and forward between the three now, I just can't make up my mind. If the main use was 120Hz 2D FPS gaming (and just ocational 3D gaming/movies), which monitor would you pick?

On paper the BenQ looks the best (but does not seem to be the case in real life), from users the Asus seems to get a lot of good words, but the LG W2363D does not get much publicity and seems to be a really underrated monitor (don't see much negative about it). I am also wondering if the early problems with the BenQ might have been fixed with new firmware, and that it was a bad batch? I was pretty set on the BenQ, but after reading more and more, it seems that mabye this is not a wise choice. :(

Best regards
Espen Andreassen :)

Just to make my choice harder the shop just listed the SAMSUNG SYNCMASTER S23A750D there as well, omg...

Edit: After looking closer at the Samsung(s) they look really "weird" lol. They seem to have built in transmitors that don't support Nvidia 3D Vision, is this true?

Is there no one here with a lot of knowledge that can help me out. Now I am going back and forward between the Asus, BenQ, Samsung and LG. I am really stuck atm, and was hoping to order in an hour or so :(

My Iiyama E2473HDS arrived from OCUK today.
The contrast is fantastic. It's my upgrade from a decent CCFL backlit monitor, I wasnt expecting much reading what people have said. But the colours are brilliant, it's nicely built, 2ms refresh.
For 180 quid you can't go wrong!
Plus I had a little play with Eyefinity for the first time today, good fun!

Lol Angel. I guess that was two votes for the LG W2363D. I am just a little put of by the digitalversus review where they say the responstime is not "that" good.

I guess the BenQ is not as good as the hype says. I am not sure about the Samsung, guess it's price atm is not worth it over the Asus or LG. I am still going back and forward on the LG and Asus, some reviews seem to say the LG, others the Asus, hmm... :(

Edit: Where is PCM2, Baddass etc to save my day? :p

I still love my iiyama E2201W-B1 with 0 input lag :D

Took me AGES to decide on that one a few years back, shame the B2 model managed to fk up and get input lag as I wanted a 2nd a year or so ago :(

If I were needing to by another one now, i guess i would go for the LG the higher res over 1680x1050 will be great and look much better. Your spec is toooo good to not go for 1900 res.

Busy watching the Royal Wedding and trying to write up a review at the same time. Not a good combination it has to be said. :p

From reports I have been getting from users it does seem that the rather excessive variability between XL2410T units has been ironed out somewhat compared to the initial revisions. Senseye presets are as terrible as ever and colour reproduction is questionable. I am sure you have read the review on my website and the review over on TFT Central and can see that it can be quite an unpredictable monitor as far as the contrast goes, at least. One issue that has not been addressed but is quite pertinent to your uses is the appearance of visual artifacts such as 'negative trailing' that are introduced by BenQ's AMA 'Advanced Motion Acceleration' architecture. This is highlighted quite nicely by PixPerAn testing, even at 120Hz, as shown below:

XL2410T-ghosting-AMA-on-120Hz.jpg
.

I don't have any similar images to demonstrate this on the ASUS but the response time compensation I consider to be a little better than on the BenQ but not as good as on the LG. The LG W2363D is almost a no-brainer in the UK as it costs around £170 at the moment which is about £100 cheaper than the others! One thing some people prefer about the ASUS is that colours appear more vibrant due in part to the glossy screen coating - this can also be problematic depending on ambient lighting and may not be something you want to contend with when gaming. The presets on the ASUS do also have a slight tendency to oversaturate colours (obviously more noticeable due to the screen coating as well) but this isn't really a large problem.

In summary; another vote for the LG I think.

Did end up ordering the LG W2363D along with my new computer. Looking forward to getting it :D

just as i was looking into buying a new monitor i came across this thread, thank god some one put all that research in lol, i just ordered the LG one from a competitor for £171 inc del (only cause i for a special ***** promotion thing for free del :P).

No worries man, that is what the web is for. Helping others out (and pr0n of course). :p

You have NO idea how much time I have used on all my computerparts before ordering... Probably like 70-100 hours on the monitors alone...

Not a gaming monitor per say but I've got the dell u2311h monitor and its absolutely brilliant, I've not noticed any ghosting or input lag. and the colours are fantastic.

I've been playing bad company 2 on it recently and it looks fantastic

what is it called when u kinda see a line in the middle of the screen, not a line as in a black or any other colour line but looks like the image been cut in 2 and one shifted a bit.

has this on my old sammy mate told me it was some sorta lag.
