Help finding a new 23''-24'' gaming monitor

How come the Acer GD245HQ 23.6" didnt come into your equation Espen?

Mainly because the shop I had to buy from did not have that monitor. And from my research it seemed to fall a little bit behind for example the LG (that I ended up ordering) for my needs. Tbh, I might have been better off with another monitor or this might have been my best bet, but it was a hard choice seeing as it's not as easy to test out the monitors in shops here in Norway. Hoping I will be happy with my purchase, and I think I will be. :)

Did he also help you to spam forums with an unrelated and incorrectly formatted signature link?

How are you finding it Espen (if you have used it yet)?

I've got the LG alongside my NEC 24WMGX3 and to be honest it's pretty much night & day in terms of overall image quality. The NEC is (as would be expected) far superior in every way, shape & form when it comes to general Windows/Office/Internet use. Even using the same settings as FlatpanelsHD used in their review with the LG, it still looks washed out and overly sharp in comparison. Having said that, I improved the sharpness issue which I think may be caused by Overdrive by reducing Sharpness from 5 to 3. That gets rid of the 'halo' / glow around fonts / icons.

However, when it comes to gaming the LG really excels. Motion is very, very smooth and input lag is non-existent. Even though the LG is slightly smaller than the NEC and the image quality isn't in the same league, in my opinion it's pretty much the best bang for buck gaming monitor available. My brother also has the LG and he's delighted with all aspects of it. I bought the LG after seeing my brother playing Bad Company 2 on his. It's as close to a CRT as I've seen when it comes to responsiveness.

I probably wouldn't be so harsh on the 2D performance if I didn't have the superb NEC sitting right next to it.

Also, I haven't tried the 3D mode at all because I'm not really interested in it. I just wanted 120Hz and a fast gaming TN panel because the NEC ghosts pretty badly when it comes to gaming.

just received mine like 2 hours ago, set it up too bad my ethernet cable hasn't come or else i would have downloaded some steam games and give it a try. btw what softweare are you using to calibrate yours? and did u install the cd it came with?

I installed the driver off the CD that came with it, but I'm just calibrating mine by eye. I've been fiddling around a lot. Current settings are:

Brightness 41
Contrast 65
Gamma -50

Preset sRGB
Red 50
Green 44
Blue 38

Sharpness 3

Thru Mode ON

That matches my NEC best but I guess they're all different. My mate has a proper calibrator so I'll give that a whirl at the weekend.

I have not got any of my components yet as the shop is still waiting to get the Gigabyte UD7 and Vertex 3 Max IOPS in. Will post here when I have tried it, and if I have any questions (and yes, I am only a normal guy, so will only be my experiences as a normal user :p ).

As I said earlier, the monitor is mainly for gaming, and therefor your experience seems perfect for me garethrobinson1 :)

Is there anyone here that has tested both the BenQ XL2410T and the LG W23633D? Still a bit torn between the two (even though I ordered the LG). This is mainly because of quite a few of my competitive CSS friends telling me a lot of good words about the BenQ. It seemed to be the most used monitor at iSeries (i42), but I guess it might be because of the hype it had at the release? LG really does seem like an underrated monitor.

The BenQ obviously has the better adjustable stand and is a little larger. It's also appears to be better for running CS 1.6 / CSS in lower resolutions. But then again it's got the negative trailing that PCM2 eludes to. I'm not sure how that will actually effect day to day usage of it. I guess if you're CSS buddies are raving about it then they obviously don't see it as a big issue.

Personally, I find it hard to ignore the £100 price difference and I'd go for the LG if I had to choose again. I'm the 4th person to watch my brother playing Bad Company 2 on it and then go out and buy it because of how good it is in that respect!

Hehe, sounds lovely ^^,

Tbh, I don't see why people would play games at lower resolutions (except for those that have been playing at extreme low res since they started playing 1.6 or anything similar). After switching from a low resolution to a higher resolution, I found my play actually improving. The main reason I was thinking of going for the BenQ was because of the extra stuff like it being a little bit larger and having a much better stand, but in the end I just thought I would be better of upgrading to a larger SSD with the extra cash I would save. I am probably overthinking stuff tbh, I will most likely love the monitor when I get it (as I have not really used many monitors except for my Samsung 226CW)!

Does it make any difference the Benq being LED and the other choices being LCD? Will we see newer 120Hz LED monitors coming out soon?

Interesting observations there - I'm using an NEC24WMGX3 now but intending to go down the triple screen eyefinity route. Just about to order a Sandybridge system.

I am tempted by the LG but it looks like the bulge (ooer) on the bezel at the bottom may cause difficulties in setting it up in triple screen - I will be bolting the monitors to an Obutto with a triple screen mount.

I will be using the setup for racing sims - iRacing some flight sims and general FPS gaming Battlefied etc.

Any views on whether the LG will be okay for triple screen - the side screens will need to be angles inwards approx 30-45 degrees in that cockpit which may cause problems with the bottom edge of the LG.

Shame - I could afford 3x£170ish for the LG's but 3 x £300 is pushing it a bit - may end up going for the cheap Hanns G 25" screen instead. wished I`d picked up 3xDell U2311H at £150 each clearance over the weekend now.

Would be nice if I could stretch to 120hz screens for my setup though - only heard good things about them as far as gaming experiences go.

PS - Agree re : Nec - in motion my OcUk 24" screen fares a little better (also VA panel). NEC generally oozes quality though.

Cheers

I'd think you'd definitely have a gap because as you say, there is a bulge of about 2mm at the bottom so it's not going to be flush. Therefore they may not be the ideal solution for a triple screen configuration. But honestly, when it comes to gaming in general I'd always get a 120hz monitor, unless you're just a very casual gamer. It's just so much smoother and the 0 input lag on the LG makes gaming more immersive & therefore more enjoyable imo.

I have the Asus, and it's a great monitor. I haven't noticed any issues regarding input lag or responsiveness at all, and the colours are very nice for a TN panel.

A friend has the BenQ XL2410T, and while I haven't used it, he said the backlight bleed isn't as much of a problem in real terms, but the colours are quite bad - best to put it in RGB mode and leave it alone according to one review I read - there is also a fair bit of banding and loss of detail in dark scenes.

I'd have the LG, simply because of the price. Let us know how it is. I'm intrigued :D

It uses edge-lit LED technology.

The full array LED technology is better, but edge-lit is really no better than CCFL backlighting. I'm pretty sure the only real benefit is reduced power consumption, but I could be so very, very wrong :D
