Help for an old pc

Even though your wattage may be high, your PSU might be crappy. I run a AGP 6800GT at work on a Generic 350W PSU in my work PC, so the 500W thing is a load of bull.

Plug your new card into a power line that has nothing else attached to it, so its the only thing on that lead.

Have you got another PC you can try the card on before forking out on a new PSU? As maybe its just duff and you can send it back to the seller.
 
the psu i have only has 2 lines one for mobo & the other the hd is connected on, I did remove the dvd disk drives from the psu so only the hd & gpu was on that line & that didnt work.
 
AGP cards are backwards compatible (to a point but that point isn't an issue here since it is 4x/8x).

You can try the old PSU but I'd suggest you try and remove all non-essential parts e.g. if you have extra hard drives/optical drives or fans don't connect them for the moment to reduce the load a bit. :)
 
I did try without one dvd drive connected, I suppose i could try without the other drive & floppy, i only have 1 hd and no other fans apart from bog standard ones.

I will try it out, and tell you how it goes,.

On the subject of psu, would all psu's be ok for an old amd?? or do i have to look out for something?
 
ok, disconnected all non essential devices, thought it was fine, windows booted up, logged in - about 30 secs in, pc froze :mad:

So, im lost, going to take gpu to a m8 who has bigger psu & agp slot, gonna try it in there, unless anyone else has any ideas??? please :rolleyes: :rolleyes:

Also could you look at your power supply and tell me what it`s +12Volt Amperage rating is ? You may have to look inside your case to see this

I was just wondering if there was a lack of power to the +12Volt rail since the 6xxx series cards often tend to need a lot of +12Volt Amperage. I see you have a 14 A and a 15A on the two +12Volt rails. Often ppl need mid 20s or more for the cards to perform well.
If you can get your hands on a PSU with a really strong +12Volt rail/s test your system with it before spending $

ok, an update for you..

agp slot had blown because the card is 8x & NOT backward compatable, im not stuck using the onboard graphics :mad:

oh well, looks like a new pc, but need a cheapo one, any spec ideas??? the pc shop said they would biuld it for me for £37 if i had parts, so on a budget any spec ideas, enuff to run bf2 that is, i dont need 8800 card.
 
Give us an idea of how much money you have and what parts (if any) you wish to re-use and I'm sure we can come up with a good, cheap system.
 
I did think about reusing parts, but tbh i moght aswell buy new again,

I have a case already & bought a new psu because i thought that was the problem.

budget, erm less than 400, 300 prefer haha but qwould poss be a bad spec machine at that price.

They said the card was only 8x & not backward compatable, also said something about the voltage the card used, requires 3v or something, tbh, i was ****** off & didnt take much notice.

Oh my very unlucky.

Your Colorsit 480W only has 17A on 12v rail, thats almost suicidal for a 6800 :eek:

+5V 45A
+3.3V 30A
+12V 17A

Remember PSUs are not about wattage, the Amps are important especially on the 12v rail.

The 4x AGP slot would be a large bottle neck too, unfortunately that doesn’t matter anymore.

You can either do a complete new build or upgrade CPU, mobo, PSU and ram and stay with AGP so you can keep your 6800.

BF2 runs perfectly with 1 GB never even comes close to using it all so dont bother with 2GB that is overkill.

Edit: i think the 4x AGP slot used 1.5v while the 8X 3v.
