Help - fridge not working in fridge/freezer

Something doesn't sound right there, particularly if it's frost free. Bought our Bosch fridge/freezer nearly 8 years ago and haven't had to defrost it once.
 
Before I replaced the zanussi fridge/freezer with broken frost free mechanism due to defrost timer,
had contemplated getting a cheap freezer alarm to give me a head's up on high temp problems - still bookmarked - but maybe you can now get more intelligent FF's that can self-diagnose and determine if ice build-up is excessive so an extended defrost is needed ?
