Ok so I have this idea for a big scale video site in my head but have no idea where to start with getting it up and running. I have a basic version running at the moment using one of the many freely available YouTube clone scripts, in this case ClipBucket. Its good as it allows videos to be uploaded and converted remotely and allows searching of videos. But I want a customised site that meets the following:

  • The problem is ClipBucket is a YouTube clone where as the site I want to create is more like a profile based site where the user would first have to create an account and login.
  • Each user would not be able to see or search for another users profile
  • Depending on the users login credentials would determine if they could search the database of profiles
  • It would be possible to record video via webcam onto your profile

I know these are some massive requirements here but can anyone point me in the right direction as to how to go about getting something like this up and running. I assume I would need to get in touch with a development team to create this?

Yes, for soemthing like that it's best to speak to a freelancer willing to take a punt on it working out, or an agency if you've got some investment to plough in. Bear in mind though, that neither of these options will be cheap. Either in development costs or in hosting.

Also, why can each use not search for other users? What's the intended use for this in that case?

Sounds like he is trying to create a video hosting site where the videos are associated between users in a private nature if I'm reading it right.

Yeah the idea is that users have their own personal video space that can be accessed by paying users

No you dont pay to upload but you would pay a monthly subscription in order to search and view. I cant really say much without giving away my idea :(

And no its got nothing to do with smut if that what your thinking, complete opposite, its a business minded site

Before even going around trying to find a way to start it, have you done the other important bits, like copyright/patenting and T&Cs to go with. Do you think you have a market for what might be a paid version of youtube?

Go watch the complete series of Dragon's Den first. :p

So you don't pay to upload, but only the few hundred (maybe thousand at best) people who've paid can see your video.

As opposed to Vimeo/YT where you can upload for free, and billions of people can see your video?

I'm not trying to ruin your plans, but it's hard to see how this would be of any benefit to anyone except you.

That's fine - in which case have your own CMS doing your thing, but use YTs API to upload and store your videos. This will be quicker, cheaper and a lot easier.
