Help! I don't want to get addicted.

But can't you see that it gives people enoyment. A lot of things we enjoy are harmful. Eating chocolate is harmful, for example. In excess! A smoke now and again won't harm you!

Please don't advise me to read your post then ignore mine...

Keep at it long enough and you will get addicted!

No, I entirely agree with your post. I know how easy it is to get addicted, but I just dislike people who label smokers "stupid." I even had this view before I'd smoked.

even if you are socially smoking you are addicted, you are addicted to the feeling smoking socially gives you, just don't do it, your doing exactly what alcoholics do.

it's not big, it's not clever, and it really does stink like crap

edit: i'm with kell_ee001

Will you please explain how it isn't stupid then? People know the risk, yet still do. They might enjoy it but the con's heavily outweigh the pro's. It's anti-social (especially these days), it's expensive and as we have agreed, over time will become an addiction.

The fact is they enjoy it. Isn't that enough of a justification? They know the risks.

Explain then how should we describe smokers when they know:

how very bad it is for your health
how bad it is for those around you
how badly you smell. i mean, it's really is foul.
how much money it costs
how anti-social it is
how addictive it can be, causing all of the above.

I wouldn't exactly call it an intelligent decision considering the facts. :)

In that case you must abhor drinking. The state of our 'drinking culture' is putting countless lives at risk in the long run!

Smoking in itself is stupid, but that doesn't mean people who smoke are stupid. They've decided that the enjoyment of doing it outweights their personal health risks.

As for other around, now that is a point. Hence why the smoking ban is favourable despite the now alienating feeling you get in many pubs.

Well drinking isn't clever, but it doesn't carry the same direct risks that smoking does. And imo only an idiot would think that the enjoyment outweighs the risks, therefore, smokers are idiots.

OK. I have never smoked a cigarette by myself in my entire life. It has always been a social thing for me. I enjoy it and if other people around me are doing it, I will too, and I quite often don't know when to stop. I guess it's just relaxing and something to do.

However, I had a few left in my jacket from the other night and I've now found myself having smoked all of them, by myself in my room. Ok, so it's not exactly a big deal but I really don't want to get addicted and I'm actually feeling a drive to go and buy another pack. I appreciate how bad it is for your health and what a bitch it is to give up, but it just seems to me like a relaxing alternative to alcohol.

Can someone please tell me what an idiot I am?
Make no mistake and do not fool yourself...

You ARE already addicted. Now you have to give up and the more cig's you smoke and longer you leave it, it will get a whole lot harder to stop. Depending on your mentality almost impossible!

Trust me I know, I smoked for 16 years :(

Will switching to Cigars help?

Say you have the urge to go out and buy another pack?

No, they're just as bad if not worse.

Oh and they definately smell worse!! ;)

You're already experiencing the 'urge' to light up again. This is nothing compared to when you've actually built up a habit and it becomes second nature to have a cig. Trust me don't fool yourself into thinking you can give up whenever you want.... that's the trap!

No they're not. Cigar smoke is not inhaled. It is held in the mouth for the taste. I have been smoking cigars for a while now and if I didn't have one for a month it wouldn't bother me.

But you still smoke them.

You're addicted too, just a different kind of habit. Say different and you're fooling yourself. I suppose they aren't bad for you and don't cause the same health problems?

I'm not addicted. If I couldn't have another cigar for the rest of my life it wouldn't bother me in the slightest. I choose to smoke fine Cuban cigars because I enjoy the taste, just like I enjoy the taste of a fine whiskey. By your reasoning, I'm addicted to whiskey too.

They don't pose the same health risks as cigarettes. There is a risk of mouth cancer for regular smokers and those who smoke in an enclosed environment can suffer the effects of inhaling the smoke.

Don't tell me I'm addicted when I clearly am not. :)
