Make no mistake and do not fool yourself...

You ARE already addicted. Now you have to give up and the more cig's you smoke and longer you leave it, it will get a whole lot harder to stop. Depending on your mentality almost impossible!

Trust me I know, I smoked for 16 years :(

This man is correct. I started smoking the same way as the OP. Found some smokes in my pocket after a night out, and that was that.

If you enjoy it and know the risks, then carry on. If you don't want to be a smoker, stop right now whilst it is relatively easy.

@Scuzi: I reckon you're addicted mate, but you just don't think you are. Just my opinion, but if it's something you enjoy then it's all good. :)

What is your reckoning based on? I have went for 2 months without a cigar and it really didn't bother me, it barely crossed my mind. My cigar smoking at its peak was twice a week but it was getting expensive. Now it's one a week at most, usually about 2-3 a month. I don't see how I can be addicted to cigars when I'm not inhaling any nicotine.

The physical withdrawl lasts for 3 days after your last cigarette, hence why you enjoyed them. Just endure being tense for the next 3, and whatever you do, don't buy another packet.

OK. I have never smoked a cigarette by myself in my entire life. It has always been a social thing for me. I enjoy it and if other people around me are doing it, I will too, and I quite often don't know when to stop. I guess it's just relaxing and something to do.

However, I had a few left in my jacket from the other night and I've now found myself having smoked all of them, by myself in my room. Ok, so it's not exactly a big deal but I really don't want to get addicted and I'm actually feeling a drive to go and buy another pack. I appreciate how bad it is for your health and what a bitch it is to give up, but it just seems to me like a relaxing alternative to alcohol.

Can someone please tell me what an idiot I am?
You're an idiot. On the bright side - when you smoke by yourself in your room, you're harming yourself only rather than anyone within ranage of you. So you can feel better about yourself for that.

I know you know this but i promise you the majoirty of smokes would say they would like to quit.. and im talking about mature people who actualy are thinking beyond what there going to have for dinner. its only the nicotine making you feel this way. just refuse. STOP yourself from going to the shop . after 3 days the nicotine leaves your body then its all in the mind and i htink given your circumstances you are probably gonna be able to stear clear. but i would say since you've come this close then maybe just pack it in all together. even socialy (specialy with the new laws etc)

also think of the money £5 a day if you smoke 20 a day (which wont take long before you start doing)

thats like coming into work at 9. and working until 9:30/10 just for cancer, death, coughs, tight chests and being smelly. :) good luck mate.

just keep yourself distracted and even if it really gets to you just refuse to go to the shop. damn it you can add me on msn and force yourself to talk to me for the next 3 days solid if it stops you from buying more! lol

Well the funny thing is I'm a complete fitness freak and do about 4 runs/3 visits to the gym a week :D

I just find it really relaxing. I guess it wears off after a while. Perhaps I should buy some cigars instead?
Drink chamomile tea instead. Take Kalms or some other herbal sedative. There are alternatives, even if you ignore illegal relaxants.

You're paying a lot of money to take a highly addictive drug that has little effect in a manner that is particularly harmful to you and anyone else within 10 feet or more, that makes you smell foul and which makes everything and everyone near you smell foul.

That's a hell of a high price to pay for relaxation that can be easily obtained in other ways, even if you don't care about the price you inflict on other people for your relaxation. The price is hugely disproportionate to what you get out of it. Would you like to buy a bridge?

You know the health risks, you know how to avoid them; entirely up to you what you do, but to take up smoking full time as opposed to the odd one here and there is just plain stupid if you know what you're doing to yourself imo, especially as you say you're a 'complete fitness freak' :p. Say goodbye to those 4 runs a week ;)

smokers are jokers

i used to do it every now and again when out drinking to be honest

the smoking band has stopped that for now though

Give it up now mate while you can. Smokers are fast becoming social outcasts.

It’s a pointless and expensive habit and you’re best off knocking it on the head before you do get addicted.

i recently started smoking not long ago. wondered what all the fuss was about, tried one and realised the buzz is actually very nice

i enjoy it for the time being having anywhere between 5 and 12 a day but i enjoy it so i will continue. i dont care that smokers are becoming outcasts if people dont like it its their problem, not mine :)

Most people in the motors forum concurr :D

Most people in the motors forum are bigots with serious aggressive anti-social problems. It's not big, clever or cool to engage in futile arguments which are completely aggressive and immaterial to the matter of hand. In fact it's the trate of a nerd. Fortunately there are some nice, normal guys there who actually go out of their way to explain things rather engage in pointless "omgwtf u suckz" talk.

Oh and whilst I admit it would seem like I was an idiot, it turns out my car is a 1.4 FSI, not a 1.4, so everything I said was true.

Get snus instead, cheap, no smoke, no smell and no ban. :)

Banned in various other countries though I believe. Still makes your breath stink and you look a bit of a plank with your upper lip sticking out (although admittedly not hugely noticeable unless you are looking) plus increases the risk of mouth cancer by quite a lot from what I've heard. It is less noticeable than cigarettes for people in close proximity so it does have at least one benefit. :)

Tommy B, you ask people to tell you that you are an idiot and then complain when smokers are labelled stupid so which do you want? You do realise they are effectively synonyms of each other?

I smoke and it's a social thing for me. I haven't smoked since college times, and it's been like 3 weeks. Everytime I get stressed or angry, I want to go buy some cigs. But when I get to the shop which is down my road, I think ah forget it. And just try and go without.

Feel like going to buy some now tbh.
