Help! I don't want to get addicted.

 I'm surprised at that by way you talk about it. I would've thought you'd understand why smoking is pleasant to smokers if you did it for 10 years...

Remember kids, if you don't want to get addicted, go out and buy more tobacco products!
lol - just to be clear, I'm not saying smoking isn't addictive. That would make me stupid... :p I'm just saying that, just because you might want a cigarette, it doesn't mean you're addicted.

what is there to enjoy? you telling me the taste of a cigarette is nice? i don't think so. the smell of one? no. what is it you are enjoying?

as i said above, you are enjoying your fix of nicotine and you don't even know it yet.

People enjoy the relaxation of it.

I don't even know it yet? I haven't touched a cigarette now for about 3 days.

After 10 years of smoking regularly, you would be physically addicted as I'm sure you know..! But for the past 2 years I've had the occasional cigarette and am not physically addicted, hence why I was so annoyed when my mate decided to tell me I'm addicted. If I was addicted I would at least have felt some kind of craving over the past 5 weeks. I never have been addicted and have only smoked when I truly wanted to. I've never smoked regularly and always enjoyed it when I do smoke - it's never been a chore.

All this being over-defensive about smoking is making me want a cigarette ;) lol

Regarding the ninja edit (:p) - you clearly smoked for different reasons to me if that's how you feel... I enjoy the whole experience of a cigarette, when I occasionally have one.

no, if you asked me when i was a smoker , do i enjoy it? i would have replied with a yes. i smoked for the same reason any smoker smoked, to relief the craving , not to enjoy the taste .

because they don't taste good do they? cigarettes? come on , admit it, its not like the taste of a nice bit of fruit , or a good cheese.

cigarettes taste absolutely disgusting, and thats one of the big reasons people get hooked, because they say to themselves, " ill never get hooked, they taste bad, they make me cough, not going to happen to me" so they continue in this false sense of security, " there is no way i can get hooked on something that taste this bad" etc etc.

of course people continue to put themselves through this initial discomfort of smoking, well because they have some brainwashing, from t.v media. etc peer pressure in that if you smoke you look good to other people.

6 months down the line when they forgot how bad a cigarettes tastes and how bad it smells, too late , they're addicted. they feel stupid because they promised themselves they couldn't get addicted to something that tastes so bad, and to save face, they convince themselves that they actually enjoy smoking, when its not that at all.

all that is enjoyed is the removal of the craving for nicotine.

The taste of a cigarette certainly don't compare to brie or pineapple, thats for sure.

But I'm not going to say they taste bad - I really don't think they do. Golden Virginia rollies, or heck those skinny dutch menthol cigarettes are lush! Am I the only one who doesn't think they taste bad? Drum though, that's a rank tobacco and does taste bad.

Reason I had my first few was peer pressure. It likely is for everyone I suppose. It was a case of my mate saying "The first few taste bad but after that they're nice", so I wanted to see what he was talking about, and yeah. Then I didn't touch them for a few years. Then about 3 years ago I started having the occasional, of my own accord (no encouragement from anyone, although obviously something will have made me want one, TV or whatever I don't know).

We're going to have to agree to disagree here Dogoid - we obviously have different opinions on cigarettes and smoking in general ;)

ok ill comply with that :)
lol, cool :p I'm not saying you're wrong, you know. Your experience is just very different to mine :)

Tommy B; Back to the original post... it's up to you what you want to about smoking.

It's your choice, just make sure you never *need* a cigarette, and if you do, it's probably time to stop ;) Either that or don't start.

It could be something you'll regret in 40 years when you've had a lung removed and need to use a fake voicebox.

On the other hand, you could keep it very occasional and enjoy it when you do have one. If you were to smoke, try and make up for it with an otherwise healthy lifestyle.

As with lots of things, it can give you cancer no matter how often you do or don't do it.

Run 4 times, gym 3 times a week a healthy-enough life style for you? :D

I have taken advice from you lot, as you can see from my decision to not go out and buy some more cigarettes.

As for Cigars, I will only have them now and again on special occasions.

Not at all. I like the taste of tobacco. Then again, I hate the taste of celery and macaroni cheese. Horses for courses.

Just given up smoking after about 13 years.

Let me tell you, I used to be healthy, would play football and rugby to a decent level.

After a couple of years of thinking I could probably give up if I wanted to, and that I only smoked cause I enjoyed it the realism finally sunk in - I was addicted, I had gone from a few a day to 20 a day. Over the years my fitness levels dropped massively (getting out of breath when running up stairs etc).

Believe me, I know the enjoyment that I used to get from smoking, I also know that this wasn't due to the taste rather feeding the nicotine monster.

Smoke if you want, if you enjoy it that much - all I will say is if I could go back to when I 1st started there is no way I would have carried on smoking, having lost my fitness, spent probably around £10k, gained more wrinkles and having stained rotten teeth - all for what?

When you look at it like that how can smokers not be considered stupid? :)

Cigars? A decent cuban ranges from £10 to £40 a cigar, depending on size, construction, age, brand and exclusivity.

The Romeo Y Julietta Churchill I'm about to tuck into now cost me £19.

what about dominican cigars like the one you posted a picture of? are they the same sort of price/quality as cubans?

The one I posted a pic of is a Romeo Y Julietta Churchill. It's a Cuban ;)

Dominican cigars are not my cup of tea to be honest although I had a very nice Zino once. I much prefer the flavour of cuban tobacco.

I will say it again-Smoke cigars as they are super super SUPER cool and by all means partake in the odd joint now and again. :p
I think the main aim with smoking is keeping it to a limit, it can be very enjoyable at times but in the same way you can loose your life to it if you go ott.

According to the romeo y julieta wikipedia page, the image you posted which is the same one on wikipedia and is labeled a dominican cigar.

OK, So before the health risks were known, why did people smoke? Were they idiots or did they just enjoy it?
