Help! I think iam signed with 2 ISP's

Right iam in a mess!

Basicly I think that iam some how signed up to 2 ISP's (AOL and Pipex) A month ago I was going to join Pipex from AOL but decided not to and I was told that my order was cancelled with Pipex over the phone

Up until recently I had my internet provided to me by AOL, until the other day when I couldnt connect. So I contacted AOL and they told me that Pipex had tagged my line and to fix this I had to contact Pipex to un-tag the line.

So I called up Pipex to do this and to my amazement I was in a 12 month contract with Pipex! even though a month ago I was told it was cancelled, I was then told nothing could be done and that I have to either terminate the contract and pay up or stick with them.

But on the other hand Iam still with AOL (but unable to connect) and whilst I was thinking my Pipex order had been cancelled I re-graded because I was offered a cheaper package with AOL because I returned and Iam now thinking I may have started a fresh 12 month contract with them

It really is confusing and I dont know where I stand, any help or recommendations would be great

I dont understand how pipex could take over your line if it already had AOL adsl on it? You cant place an order on a line thats already got DSl unless you get a code to transfer it?

Id get onto pipex sharpish and get a manager to sort this out... did you not sign anything or set up a direct debit or in any way agree to the order? or was it all done but you cancelled and they agreed on the phone?

Unless AOL cancelled the line i dont see how pipex could just take it over with no code :confused:

You cannot be signed up with two providers so dont worry... ONE of them wont be supplying the service so you have no contract and nothing to pay. The difficult bit is finding out which one :p

Last month I got a MAC code from AOL to join Pipex but decided not to go through with it all. Pipex told me my order was cancelled with them and AOL told me I would remain with them. But Pipex today told me nothing had been cancelled when I was told a month ago it was. But to my knowledge AOL set dates where accounts are cancelled with them when a MAC code has been given from AOL to another ISP.

Nothing was signed but direct debit was set up but when I changed my mind to stick with AOL I was told that my order would be cancelled

Iam pretty sure its Pipex Iam signed up with.


Iam thinking my next step is to cancel with AOL and go through with Pipex, Iam thinking this because it appears Iam unable to connect to AOL and with what Pipex told me today Iam in a contract with them

Not specifically, no. It's the Virtual Path Identifier and Virtual Circuit Identifier values you need for all BTw ADSL.
 
So in summary, you began a migration and gave Pipex the MAC.

You then believe you cancelled the migration with Pipex and upgraded with AOL.

The migration then completed and your ADSL shifted to Pipex.

Net result you owe AOL for the balance of a new 12 month contract due to the upgrade.

A lot depends on what you can recall of the cancellation conversation with Pipex. I assume you have nothing in writing? No e-mails?

If thats how its ended up then he doesnt have to worry as he owes AOL nothing.. they arent providing a service so therefore no contract. Only one provider can be providing the ADSL afterall. They cant charge for a service they are not providing.
 
You are missing the 12 month contract point though.

Migrating out does not remove your obligation to pay for the balance of a contract if you leave before it has ended.

Yes,but if I read your post correctly you then upgraded your AOL account which I expect will have triggered a new 12 month contract period.

You really need to decide which way you want to fight this one.

Either you need to fight Pipex to get the contract there terminated as you contend that you cancelled the order, or you have to talk to AOL and see if they intend to hold you to a 12 month contract or if in the circumstances they will waive that.
 
I have just been on the AOL live help and they have checked my account to be told that my account had been cancelled, but due to Pipex telling me my last order was cancelled I asked the agent to e-mail me so that I have proof someone told me that my AOL had been cancelled but the agent told me he couldnt do this as it was against the authority :confused: , anyway I have saved the conversation log and the conversation ID so surely that should be enough now for the AOL to be cancelled Ill call them later for confirmation.
 
Did the agent also confirm that they were not billing you for any contract balance as a result of the cancellation?

Sounds like you may have avoided further charges from AOL, but it is a shame that you've ended up in a 12 month contract with Pipex.
 
Yes they told me the last date I was going to be billed, so if I keep a record of the conversation I should fine surely now

I suppose it is a bit of a shame Im with Pipex but there is one thing my internet speed seems a lot quicker with Pipex it connects at 7.6mps rather than AOL's 2.0mps.

Is it true that its better to download through they day with Pipex, say 9am - 5pm or something

Peak time Pipex downloading is a bit of a no-go. torrents are completely crippled and other things like newsgroups I find much slower in peak. I.e. 30-100kb/s instead of 400-600kb/s off peak. Normal http downloads are generally ok, e.g. apple.com trailers (incedentally a good place to test speed)
 
I'm not a huge downloader, I'm on their midi 15Gb service, so I haven't really tested. Bout 5.30pm-11.30pm maybe. I'm sure someone else here can confirm.

Just tested my usenet and was getting full speed at 5.45pm. However that's not necessarily an indication of torrents and other p2p
