I am trying to rent my room out from 29th july to 23rd sept, because i am going back home to enjoy the rest of summer with my family. so I posted my room up on gumtree and had serveral feed backs.

There is a French guy, Mr crouch, saids he is interested to rent it for her daughter who is visiting England for education reason. However there are a few dodgy things that confuse me in his email and that makes me think he could be a scammer.

In the 1st email, he asked about details of the room and distance to the bus stop, and the rent per calender month etc and told me payment will be made via Bank Cheque or Draft.
then i answered all those questions and told him i want a total of 550 gbp from 29th july to 23rd sept.

In the 2nd email, he told me the instruction of how he sending me the money but it is really confusing and badly written, so I copy and pasted on to here:

I will like you to know that i will be paying you an advance payment first for two month. I will have my client issue out payment to on my behalf since i am not in United Kingdom now to do this ok. So he will be sending you Bank Cheque. I would like to inform you that is likely my client sends you an over payment to you. After you Once payment is recieved, you will have to take it to your bank and have it deposited into your account for clearing and get back to me with the clearance date,so that i can get you details to send the excess funds to my Daughter's travelling Agent via western union money transfer as soon as the cheques clears, so he can make traveling arrangements for my daughter to come down to your end.You will have to deduct your money for the rent which is(£1,100, being payment for a two month rent as an advance payment.). *he misunderstood me on the part that i said 550 gbp for the whole duration, and I asked ppl to pay me all the money in one go because my landlady wants me to pay all my rent up before I leave brighton

She (her daughter) will be coming down to your end as soon as payment is duely paid and the travelling agents recieved the money for her travelling arrangement to enable her obtain her tickets and some other things that will be needed for her journey. kindly forward the necessary formation for the payment to be sent to you immediately find below the information you need to send me to enable you get payment.

AND Mr. Crouch asked for my Name, Full address, and my contact number.

I replied that I am confused with all the money transfering instruction and told him I am not familiar the western union at all and asked him if he can transfer all that 550 gbp into my account via internet banking (which i think it is the easiest way to do) and asked when is her daughter arriving.

This morning (16th july) I received his 3rd email and here is:
Hello Calvin,

Thans for your details given to me for payment, also i will like you to consider the room rented for my daughter and please don't talk to any body about it,i will update when the payment is sent out from my client.

One thing i want you to understand is that my client will issue payment to you in excess you have to deduct £550 and have the rest send to my daughter 's travelling agent that will arrange have for coming down you don't have to be worried about transferring money down to him it is easier, safer and faster and for that i will comoensate you with £50 for your run around for the western union transfer.my daughter will be coming down to your location by 29th of July.

Looking forward to read from you if this is understandable.

Regards,

Mitchel

Now I am not sure what sure I do, cos me and my fd are suspecting him that he could be a scammer. So I replied him and asked the details for his client and the travelling agent company etc and asked why would he trust me to handle the money more than his client?

However I still havent made up if I should rent my room to him or not, because I dont really want to pay the rent for the next two months since I will not be here and I am going to start to pay the rent for the house next year in late july. So please help!

and Thank you for reading this long thread.

The 4th email from Mr crouch

hello Calvin,

I want you to understand that my client that want to issue the payment is from you uk but he has travelled to dubai with his cheque book and i told him he will be issuing the payment to you from there and also my daughter's travelling agent is from paris so if and cheque will take longer time to clear if my client send it to the travelling agent but if he send it to you it will clear faster because is uk cheque.

Hope this is understandable.

Regards,

Mitchel.

he is paying two months in advance for two months rent? :)

Anyway, if you have any qualms, just leave it. Oh and WU money transfer + excess payment = noooooo

The cheque will be no good and since he's asking for payment via Western Union the transfer will be difficult to trace.

You will be left with a dummy cheque and out of pocket.

Obvious scam.

he's sending more than you asked for by cheque and want to to send back the difference?

sounds like a scam to me, why do you need to give his agent money, when if he just pays the £550 it will cover the rent?why does he want to give you more?

got to be a scam, but i MIGHT be wrong?

Because Mr crouch said the money to the travelling agent is for her daughter's travelling ie. tickets..

Tell them you want a photo with a large fish on their head to prove they're genuine.

lul wut?!

And yes it's always something but this is pretty much the standard scam since they where invented.

Also western union is only used by scamers now as there is no protection.

Calvin I told you it was a scam. Maybe you should believe your friend more often? :p

Ok it is a scam then, and now who wants to take the room!?? It s cheap, there is only one housemate left.. so basically you can have a free house for 550 pound for 2 almost 2 months!!!
