My brother has a 55 plate 520d. It recently wouldn't start on him and he was getting all sorts of lights on the dash. When pressing the start button all the lights would go out so I suspect a flat battery.

Is there anything special you need to do to jump start a 520d? I have a 2.3 petrol and some jump leads. I've heard of IBS sensors and all sorts of stuff, plus the battery is in the boot.

Also, I suspect that something somehow left itself on when he was parked up, causing the battery to die. Are there common things to check for?

Any help would be appreciated. I don't want to fry his electronics.

Thanks.

I don't want to fry his electronics.
to make this impossible i would recommend buying a cheap battery charger and just charging his battery. i got a nasty chinese thing from tescos for £12 the other week. after around 4 hours it had more than enough charge to get my car going

when i jump started a friends 325 it had the jump lead clip points under the bonnet, no messing with the battery in the boot.

find these, connect, jump.. unless a diesel is different?

Apparently the front right sidelight is on and won't turn off regardless of what he does with the switches. Any ideas?

Assume he hasn't left the indicator stalk down?

If not you'll need to start fault finding both the wiring and the stalk itself.

As above stop it from drawing current as a temporary measure

Indicator stalk is off. I'll probably head round tomorrow to look. Any other suggestions or advice are appreciated.

Nope, they are the same as petrol, the positive has a red cap on and is easy to see.

Most likely caused by low voltage making the vehicle electrics do silly things - it's not uncommon for sidelights etc to come on when the voltage in my truck is too low to start the engine, jump start or new battery cures it, I imagine an e60 is no different.

Ok, so it refused to start after a charge. Disconnected the IBS sensor and ir fired up straight away. What is the point of this sensor, and does it matter if we leave it unplugged?
