Hey guys just built my PC and it wont stay on for longer than 15 mins.

Power just drops randomly...

Could it be the PSU

I had this problem with my last PC, and I kept the PSU, CD rom and HDD

What could be causing this, also the fan on the CPU is not working for some reason... could this be to do with the psu or something?

Chelmsford Essex if anyone is kind enough to help. :)
Please help me

Thanks Martyn

If the fan on the cpu isnt spinning, it could be getting too hot and shutting down.

is it connected to the motherboards CPU_FAN header?

Yep connected correctly, first time I switched it on worked for a few seconds, now nothing...

defenatly getting too hot because a slight smell was coming off it aswell?

Have you checked your temps with speedfan or the like or in bios if you cannot get this far? Also it may seem a silly question but you did use thermal paste?

The intel cpu cooler comes with thermal paste already on it, did not put any aftermarket paste on it.

Just read that you kept the PSU, and had the same issue in your previous PC. I would hazard a guess that the PSU may have a fault. Not got another spare PC that you could rob a PSU from for a test or a mates PC?

Think im going to hazard that guess too. What a joke, got rid of what I thought was making the problem but to for it to be one of the few things i did keep would be a bummer!

Grr

Wish I had another, not sure how I will get my hands on one, looks like I will have to RMA the current one and buy one for the mean time. But testing a different one would be good.

If anyone is in chelmsford please feel free to come over and help me haha

just tested the PSU with a paperclip, and it seems to be stayin on fine...? any other suggestions?

have you done this yet. very likely that if your cpu fan isnt spinning the cpu wil be overheating and the thermal protection is switching it all off. could you try the cpu fan in another header, just to rule out the mobo cpu_fan header being goosed?

well cant do speed fan, literally finished building 30 mins ago then the problem started. Wont stay on longer than 10/15 mins the first times then now a few seconds then it will reboot. Its strange. All the parts are new except the psu cd drive and HDD...

well then i guess you could try booting into bios and watching the cpu temp to see what it gets to before it shuts down. have you tried the cpu fan on a different header to rule out the cpu_fan error being faulty, unlikely but worth a try, shame you cant get your hands on another psu to test on your system

I dont want to sound stupid, but my PSU 24pin connector only has 23 wires to 23 pin sockets. Is this normal?

But at one end 2 orange cables go into one hole...

but my motherboard has 24 pins with 24 metal pins in...

Just some information

Just looked online and this seems to be normal!

Can I just add... you have shorted the PSU power pins which will make it start but do you have a load connected to it or is it just sitting with the fan happily spinning on it's own? What is the brand and power of said PSU? The fact you had problems with your last PC (and carried over the PSU) makes me think this is the problem.

Corsair VX 550W

Thats true I had no load on there.

Okay so I took off my GPU and didnt pug anything thing in except the 24pin main board and cpu 8 pin power and it restarted within seconds as usual...

That's a decent PSU so im a little surprised. It's either your temps or PSU doing it. Can't really be sure as a PSU can't be proved faulty until you put it under load. Might look fine running on it's own but it's what happens when it needs to power a full system that counts.

Just ran it on the 24pin main board and the cpu powerage and still cuts out

Is the CPU Fan running? Im trying to figure why you had this problem on the old machine also. Are you using the same cooler? The CPU Fan should run constantly... If it's stopping then there's your problem.
