Had an absolute guts full of Vauxhall. Up until now I’ve had no problems with previous Vauxhalls I’ve had, However the last year My Astra and my Vectra have had both Head gasket failures, 2 oil cooler failures, Dual fly wheel clutch changed on one, Starter motor, Alternator and lose pipe…. I can honestly say I wont buy a Vauxhall ever again.

Even after all this work has done, both are still losing water like there’s no tomorrow and have a load of gunk aka oil still in the water.

So…. My intentions.

Going to get both to be drained with a view to part x’ing them.

I intend to put £5000 + both cars towards a new one. Vectra is 1.9TDI 56plate 60k and Astra is 54 plate on 1.7TDI 52k.

Could you kind people please give me an idea on what I should go for. I personally fancy making the step up to a BMW. However I don’t want huge costs to deal with if they go wrong, i.e are repairs similar price to most comment fault prices on other type cars?

I’m living in Swansea, so if you fancy doing a quick search and give me suggestions, I’d be very appreciative.

Good luck with that. :p

Buy summit like a Bora.

Whilst it's nice to aspire to this, it's not a great idea (unless you can get a fully comprehensive warranty) considering you go on to say...

Repairs costs outside of warranty can get pretty expensive, although parts costs aren't particularly expensive, labour charges added on top will quickly ramp up repair costs.

If you can find a decent (FBMWSH) lower mileage example, you can get a pretty decent warranty which is backed by BMW and doesn't cost the earth, I guess this all depends on what car you are after, and what your budget ends up at after the sale (or trade) of your existing cars.

Thats fine in that case, BM out of the question at this moment. Again i'm not a car Enthusiast so any advice would be good.

I also forgot to mention that i will need something to occasionally tow a caravan.

Do you have a total budget in mind? (no idea what your two are worth, so not sure what to place the budget at)

I had a Vauxhall Astra and in the 2 years of company car ownership it had a new clutch, flywheel, replacement gearbox. Admittedly they probably all failed because of eachother - though the gearbox sounded properly shagged, a bearing went in it apparently - it's pretty bad. It had all that within about 20-25k miles.

I'm "only" 30 (as of the 25th of March), and I'd happily drive around in that (well, perhaps a different colour). They really as, as the name suggests, Superb. And the size/weight will help with your caravan towing antics.

Far better levels of kit than you'll find in a similar priced Passat, a lovely drive, and (looking past the badge), is up there with VW and Audi for interior quality.

I find it odd that at "only" 28, you are unwilling to drive a Superb, but will happily tow a caravan?

The caravan is seldom used. I drive a Skoda when I occasionally do the Taxi and yes it’s a solid car, but I’d prefer something else if I’m paying £7000+

Audi A3 S-Line in white?

I can see his point, it's not the most attractive thing but lets face it, your 26 and need something to tow a caravan and have a budget of 7k, it's a realistic option even if you don't like the look.

That Superb looks quite nice actually. A Bora looks a bit leaner but no idea how they are for things going wrong :p
