Hello my friend has been having problems with his computer it is an old P4.

It has a Bestec 300w 12Z psu in it which i think may be shorting/dieing.

Everytime you plug the computer into the mains it turns on, on its own then turns off after 5 seconds and repeats this process over and over. I thought it might be the power switch so i disconnected it from the mobo and that didnt work either.

Is this charateristic of a faulty PSU and would anyone be able to recomend me a place to get a replacement if needed?

P4 with SATA and 4 pin and 20 pin mobo connectors.

Many thanks

Can you check the board with another PSU, as my friends pc a few years ago did what you mentioned above and the board was shot after testing with a spare PSU.

I havnt got a psu that work in there i dont think which is really annoying me.

All power supplies should work as the 24 pin ATX connector should have a detachable 4 pin to make 20 pin. Same goes for the cpu power connector.

What make is your PSU :)

Just a quick one before i do!

What do you reckon i could pick a cheap AGP socket 775 motherboard up for? Second hand is cool; assuming i have to change it?

Second hand I would have thought around the £20 mark maximum.

Right just got round to transplanting my psu into my mates computer and it still does the same thing.

Before i go ahead and start looking for a mobo, is that definitely going to be the componant that needs changing?
