That... is the best you'll get for the money, nice well balanced set up!

How where how much??

anyone else have any ideas? Or help?

thanks

its free until early 2010 then it will start auto shutdowning every 2 hours until you buy the full version. it will expire completly in june

quote: Watch the calendar. The RC will expire on June 1, 2010. Starting on March 1, 2010, your PC will begin shutting down every two hours. Windows will notify you two weeks before the bi-hourly shutdowns start. To avoid interruption, you'll need to install a non-expired version of Windows before March 1, 2010. You'll also need to install the programs and data that you want to use

you can get it by going to the microsoft website and downloading it - just type windows 7 into google

Windows 7 looks great, get it from here. The problem is that it runs out in march 2010 and I hear that it will cost more than what we are paying for vista now. Your choice I guess, but vista is very capable and you know how much it costs.

Here is a full spec which is just a bit over budget (£525 with your free delivery):

That Phenom dual core is indeed awesome. Its just a quad core with two cores disabled ( the disabled ones may or may not be faulty). That motherboard I specced allows you to unlock the two cores - if some of them were fully functional before being disabled - free cores :D

That keyboard, speakers, and mouse may be cheap - but they are very good, have used all three.

That graphics card is very good for the price, will run all modern games well.

i like the look of this i can not be bothered with the hassle Windows 7 brings at reinstall time. i don't need the speakers so that brings me a step closer to price. looks like i will end up putting my hand in me pocket for a couple of quid.

thanks for that.

You can't go wrong with andi's spec for what you want for the money.

And you probably knew, deep down, you were going to have to dip your hand in your pockets sooner or later - it's what kids do best to their Dads - you give them a budget and yet you still end up subsidising it some where along the line ;) (i know i run a similar failed system.)

If you are interested in using windows 7 here's an easy way to get the 64 bit version - which is appropriate as you're using over 3 gig. (i would consider it as your son could buy a higher specced component and save for windows 7 release.)

Here's the direct link for Win 7 64 bit - link

However, you must right click the link and choose save as - if you left click the link it will redirect you to the W7 homepage.

And these are the 64 bit keys that you need - any will do:

Sooner or later, more like most days. :D

That'll be "sooner" then :-)

The joys of parenthood - I'll give it a few more years yet xD

Can I suggest a trip to a couple of major online retailers, you can get a nice enough keyboard and mouse for less than half the cost of those logitech's between them, if on a tight budget. Supermarkets often have cheap 2.1 speaker sets too - mine are absolutely fine for my non-audiophile ears.
