I have had my 400D a couple of months and really enjoy it. Now is the time i want a better lense than the kit lense i have now. Im still only a beginner in my eyes but i still like to have a little quality in my camera case.

At the moment all i use it for is moto-x photography and everyday photos (holidays etc). Since moto-x is fast action id like a fast autofocus and maybe a large aperture for light. As for focal length, im not really sure on what to get as i have managed to get some really good shots (imo) with the kit lense. Would 70-200 be too big ?

I have frequently been looking around to teach myself whats on sale and what does what, and these are a selection of lenses that have caught my eye:

(i have added prices which they can be had for)

-Canon EF 70-200mm F/4 L - £340
-Canon EF 24-70mm F2.8 L USM - £650
-Canon EF 28-135mm F/3.5-5.6 IS USM - £250
-Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM - £340
-Canon EF 24-105mm F4 L IS USM - £500
-I also like the look of the new 50-150 sigma 2.8 lense but i dont know the cost

I dont really want to have to spend more than £500 (im a beginner). I am thinking that the 70-200 is great but at 70mm minimum id be forever changing lenses?. This makes me think that maybe the 24-105mm would be best, although for a non L lense i could have the 28-135 for allot cheaper.

Any help would be brilliant, the more i look the more i find to confuse me.

Out of that list I think the three I would choose would be the

-Canon EF 24-70mm F2.8 L USM - £650
-Canon EF 28-135mm F/3.5-5.6 IS USM - £250
-Canon EF 24-105mm F4 L IS USM - £500

I think the other two would just be too long. Holdifay shots I assume will be part landscape/people/buildings etc. and a minimum focal length of 70mm would really annoy you.

And out of those three I would say between the 24-70 and the 24-105, maybe the IS pushing the 24-105 slightly ahead. :)

I have been looking at both of them for a while and can't decide which of them would be the better bet...

You are in the same predicament as me and I am going for the 24-105. Theres a lot of good reviews and loads of people here that recommend it.

It looks as if the Canon EF 24-105mm F4 L IS USM would be my best bet. I just need to pluck the courage to splash out on it. Does anyone have any pictures to show the sharpness? Or is this nothing to worry about. Also, would you trust buying from HK ?

If i really wanted a long telephoto, then having the 24-105 means id be able to think about a 70-300mm lense instead of having the 70-200.

Same applies to the wide end to, this would only leave a 10-20 or 12-24. Thats only if i get into photography even more :p
