Help me choose a NAS

Need some help from people who have used NAS devices.
What I want:
4Tb+ capable - happy to put in own disks
Mac & PC capable for file sharing - Time Machine access a bonus
Ability to backup whole of NAS AND selective backups
Network share/map drive access and restrict folders to specific users.

Not bothered about:
Redundancy - useful but this is why I want backup options
Web access.

Price range - open at this stage. Rather find out what there is that does what I want - maybe they all do?!
Tried Freenas on a PC but seemed more advanced than I really need and didn't seem to have any backup option.
Are the Synology and Qnap boxes OK?
Buffalo has also been suggested to me.

I've had a Qnap 209 for a number of years, can't fault it in any way & am thinking of an upgrade to their newer bays for the extra software support. I am also very happy with their customer support & their forums are busy with users giving advice & solutions to any issues/questions you may have. S0 a +1 for me for Qnap.
