My first ATI card was a 1Mb PCI Mach 64 (later upgraded to 2Mb!) and my last one until now was a HD2900XT, so I think it's about time I gave AMD another go.

I've just upgraded the rest of my PC, going from a Phenom II 965 BE on an Nforce 780a board to a 4690K on a Gigabyte GA-Z97X-Gaming 3 but at present I'm still using my old GTX 580, so I need graphics card advice!

I've got a Cooler Master Cosmos S case so hopefully space won't be a problem, and I've got an 850w PSU so I should be OK for any single card?

My monitor is only 1080p, but if it went bang tomorrow I'd replace it with a 1440p one, and I might anyway before long.

Any recommendations?

Get yourself a 290X 8GB Variant, hold onto it until the 3XX series are released, wait for the reviews and then decide if its worth swapping out or keeping, either way that 8GB 290X is going to be lovely for higher res gaming.

You'll be wanting one of these Sir, quite simply an overclocking beast that runs cool, quiet and is faster than anything near it in its price range. :)

If you want an 8GB variant, then Si's choice is also good too. This is a cracking price on an 8GB 290X with a wonderful cooler. :)

Any benches that compare this model to the 970? How does it stack up?

Is it a 3-slot card, the Lightning? When you say it will smash the 970, is that because of the VRAM issue, or is it just a faster card (compared to the other 290 cards, which I thought were very much on a par with the 970, and in some cases not as fast)?

at 1080p the 970 and 290X are roughly around the same with the 970 probably pulling slightly ahead in a lot of things, however once you get to 1440p onwards, the 290X will pull ahead due to the better memory structure, higher bus speed and actual 4gb of member rather than the controversial 3.5gb +0.5gb ram that the 970 has.

Thats comparing just the 4gb versions, if you add in the 8gb version, you have a lot more ram to utilise for higher res gaming.

Basically at the moment, 290X 8GB cards are arguably the kings of 4k gaming.

im dubious of exactly how bad the 3.5gb of RAM thing for the 970 is affecting some people. I can see people at 4k or 3440 screens hitting maybe RAM issues but at 1080p or 1440p itl have to be a game which is exceptional at guzzling VRAM, like games with silly mods.

Having said that, i have seen people have problems on the 970 RAM thread claiming to have trouble at 1080p with some recent releases like Dying light.

Got a 290x in my box atm, i think will check GPU-Z when i start playing it later and see how its doing at 1080p and 4k.

Supposedly* at 1080p Dying Light is hitting 3.5Gb with the 970.

*Not verified by my self. A freind said he saw this with his 970.
