I did my first bathroom in my own house when we first moved in. It was my largest DIY project. After about 18 months the tiles cracked on the floor. 2 cracks right across the floor exactly the same distance as the floor boards.

Another month or so later a large tile fell off above the Bath
Skim plaster is a couple of mm thick. NOT enough to support a large tile.

PVA is water based. When it gets wet it it turns sticky again. and the tiles will fall off.


I learnt my lesson. And every bathroom since has been done correctly. Some may say overkill. But my wetroom hasn't leaked into my kitchen yet.
 
Ha ha that's often the best way of learning although I much prefer to learn by other peoples mistakes than my own :D
