Hi all, in my current room I am extremely stuck for space and have been seriously toying with the idea of getting a laptop. I've always found them quite fiddly but I figure as I don't do a huge amount of gaming on my pc and I could just buy a mouse instead of using the stupid touchpad it might be an ideal solution. Then I came upon the idea of wall mounting a tv and connecting the laptop up to it. Thus allowing me to get rid of my pokey little desktop desk and freeing up some space in my 8x8 cell! Sounded like a plan to me.

Just one thing has been niggling me with it though, although I don't game much diablo 3 is coming out and that's a bit of a draw for me. You also get a hell of a lot more with a desktop bang for buck wise, and, at the end of the day, If I'm hooking the visuals up to a wall mounted TV, I could ditch the desk and monitor and how much of a footprint does a pc on it's own really have?

I've got £650 to spend on a laptop or a desktop. I'm comfortable building a pc myself but wouldn't mind a prebuilt (so i can have tidy cables). I get 15% discount off any purchase from dell (thinking lappy). I have a good monitor (until i buy the tv), good speakers, decent mouse and keyboard already. If i were to get a desktop I'd not need a fancy case (always fancied an antec 300) I also have a 4850 512mb gfx card and a decent 700w sparkle psu. I'd like to replace both of these (gfx card most importantly, then a modular psu for tidyness) but I could delay replacing them for a month or two if needed.

So, with the tv in mind (1080p), if you're in my shoes do you go for the laptop or a desktop?

Spec me either really, only thing is I'd need an O/S if i'm building my own pc so please factor that into the budget!

Thanks loads.

Couple of things stick our for me, rather than a 4850 you're better off going with a DX11 card. And Sparkle and quality don't resonate together for me.

by good i mean it's shown no sign of packing up in the year or so that I've had it. While i would prefer to switch to a modular psu my priorities in budget lie more with getting the best possible out of other components and then updating psu later. same with gfx if absolutely necessary although I'd prefer to get that updated asap really.

I would go with a desktop, I have had a few laptops and the one I'm on now bugs the hell out of me lol, that or if you get a laptop read up and buy a good one.

My brother has a Toshiba low end gaming one that plays crysis dx10 nicely, for around 600 700 quid so maybe try checking out there range.

ok I'm being swayed towards the desktop. In that case, keeping in mind I already have peripherals and a psu but need o/s and case, what should i be looking at purchasing?

Thanks for the help btw.

how about something like this?

Intel Core i5 750 2.66Ghz (Lynnfield) (Socket LGA1156) - OEM
Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 5770 Vapor-X 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card
Asus P7P55D LE Intel P55 (Socket 1156) DDR3 Motherboard
Corsair XMS3 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (CMX4GX3M2A1600C9)
Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit - OEM (GFC-00599)
Samsung SpinPoint F3 1TB SATA-II 32MB Cache - OEM (HD103SJ)
Antec 300 Three Hundred Ultimate Gaming Case - Black
Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro Rev 2 CPU Cooler (Socket 939 / AM2 / AM3 / 775 / 1156 / 1366)

which comes in at £665. have i chosen anything completely rubbish? will it be faster than my current e4300 with 512mb 4850 setup? would I have any chance of getting near it performance wise if i went for a similarly priced laptop?

Thanks!
