Help me decide... AOC/LOTRO?

Im suprised nobody mentioned City of Heroes, City of Villains. Not sure how these two games are doing as of late as I stoped playing a while back but they have had about 14 expansions to date, all free and the gameplay is right up there with the best of them.

I always wanted to get into CoH, but I could never get past the lack of equipment and weapons. My brain was too locked into progressing via more impressive equipment :)

Yeah, I could never get to grips with the whole 'Enhancements' thing in CoH/CoV either, in MMO's I'm used to upgrading armour and weapons etc as you go along and increase in level so it was a bit weird not having that. But to be honest, I would wait for Champions Online now if it's a super-hero MMO that your looking for, due out in September I think.

Having played lotro religiously since beta im going to be biaed and say get a sub and see how you fare.

As for AOC, I've been playing this for the past 2 weeks as 4 of my friends are always banging on about how it's improved no end since it was released, and how the pvp is great.

Lotro has better visuals and a more mature community, AOC has proper Pvp whereas Lotro has monster play (free people vs a variety of monsters like wargs, orcs, reavers, spiders etc)

Yes you can play as a monster (creep) vs players (freeps) you auto get to level 50 (not sure if thats changed to level 60 now) you can still get achievements on them and make them stronger.

Good fun.. :D

monster play... hmm... so can you duel?

you open up 'Monster Play' after reaching lvl 10 on your PvE char....

its great fun on both sides but there are imbalance issues which a lot of players dont like.

personally i love it, and have seven 'creeps' all high ranked , it just takes time to develop your 'creep'...

it all takes place in the 'Ettenmoors' with freeps fighting creeps for 'keeps' .. and yes you can duel

I play both LOTRO and Eve Online - LOTRO I've been playing since it came out and I thankfully have a lifetime subscription like some of the other guys here so it's quite nice as you can just pick it up again at different times when you fancy a change without having to worry about paying the suscbription every month for nothing. It's a great looking game, nice people and very helpful as well. If you are on the Eldar server, I can point you in the direction of a decent "kin" that has people of all levels. Since the last major expansion, they've increased the size of the world quite substantially. There's plenty to be done in the game and you can have quite a few characters on the go at any one time with the same subscription (you can only login with one at a time of course).

I would also recommend Eve Online though - it's a lovely looking game (as someone said, since the graphics updates, it looks amazing). It's very immersive I feel. The nice thing about Eve is that if you aren't someone that has a lot of time to play all of these games, you set "skills" training (rather than going for XP as in most games) which means that when you are not playing, you are still improving your character. Works very well I think. It's a very cut-throat game and your character is never really that safe. There are of course safer areas to be in the game, but you can be attacked by anyone at any time and you can lose a lot. If you're not careful, you can set yourself back in the game quite a bit! I like the actual in-game risk. Many other games you can just get killed and come right back in with no ill effects other than say a repair bill or damage to your stuff.

Just my 2 bronze / ISK ;-)
