Samsung LE46D580 46" 1080p 50hz LCD TV with Freeview HD @ £574.99

or

Samsung UE46D5520 46" 1080p 100Hz LED SMART Internet TV with Freeview HD @ £713.90

I should be purchasing a hd-tv for christmas is there anything better coming out before then???

I really am unsure which one to choose, im leaning towards the D580 because its almost £140 cheaper. Both have usb media support + freeview hd which is what im after.

Anyone have any alternatives with both of these?

I think that would all boil down to the way the TV looks in the room. (almost wafer thin LED backlit TV vs 2-3" traditional LCD TV TBH) this is coming from a bloke that sold CRT tellies over 10 years ago & thought that plasma tellies were thin.

The difference in thickness of these tv's doesnt bother me as it will be replacing a Phillips CRT 28" which is many years old.

The fact the D5520 LED has lower power consumption is tempting me but at £140 is it worth it? internet access doesnt bother me.

Its the screen quality any better on the D5520 ?

The faster refresh rate of the latter would be a big advantage for gaming and fast paced movies, it's the better of the two.

the refresh rate will not matter for blu ray or tv formats

blu ray is 24fps = 24 x 3 = actually 72 FPS

tv is either 50 or 60 fps, 50htz i think.
its how well the TV will pull down / process will depend on how good tv will look
100htz is likely better for games

best to get the one with the best picure toy our eyes, get down somewhere and have a look
LED generally does better blacks. LCD doesnt do black at all well and black is everything in TV
LED generally uses less electricity if you care

or look up reviews if poss - from what hifi is a good start - I think they are pretty bang on with the majority of their reviews

LED TVs currently use LCD panels, so LED TVs are LCD.

Its the backlighting that is dfiferent i.e. using LED's in different formats to create the light.

Full LED is the best as far as I am aware - its certainly advertised as being.

I have a Samsung LED Monitor PX2370 - its ok, very slim and very energy efficient.
Picture is pretty good - it does crush blacks but not as bad as LCDs I have owned.
You dont get the blocky black pixelisation on it - only way I can describe it so that is better for me as I hate that
