Hi, I'm getting closer to my first years ncb and have been thinking about the car I would like to buy. I currently drive a 1997 Fiesta Flight and tbh its a bit slow and crap to drive. Don't get me wrong it's a great first car and has never let me down but i want something a bit faster and more stable on the road. I've had a couple of close calls with the fiesta in wet weather because of its poor cornering. My budget will be around £4000. I've been looking at E30 BMW's, like the 325i and so on. I don't know what it is about them but i really like the look of these. I know they're old but they appeal to me. Another option is to buy my mums 2001 Audi A6. Shes looking to sell it and says she will sell it to me at a reduced price. It has the 1.8T engine in it which in my opinion is a bit too small for the car. I've driven the car before and I liked it but it just seemed a bit sluggish and not as responsive as i would've liked, but the ride was very comfortable and overall pretty good.

I'm currently studying and don't have any special requirments for the car. It does not matter how much boot space it has or anything like that. It mainly has to be fun to drive. I live in a fairly good area so my insurance is not a problem but i don't want to pay anything more then £1500 a year.

Thanks, suggest away :)

tbh, with a years NCB and being 19, you wont get £1,500 with insurance on a 325.. will be a lot more.. Mondeo?

That A6 with the 1.8T isnt going to rip up the competition at the traffic light grand prix, but its a nice engine and I didnt find it too slow in the family A6 in the past. Only issue I would raise would be running costs if your a student :)

If your main requirement is to have fun, then get a MX-5. You could get a mint mk1, might even find a mk2.

Insurance isn't to bad, I got mine at 19 with no NCB and it cost me £1.5k (a lot cheaper now thankfully)

You won't get anything more fun for your budget and insurance needs, but you need to think if you want those extra seats. (I find it's great having a 2 seater, you never have to drive on a night out :o)

Cheers for the replies. Im not looking at anything too fast as i don't have the experience yet. I just want something that corners well and the quattro system would provide a lot of reasurance through corners although the Audi isn't the best cornering car in the world. The running costs should be fine with the Audi. I have a tidy part time job that gets me from around £450-700 a month which all goes to me :) I'm lucky enough to have parents that don't expect me to pay anything towards the bills. I've had a look at the Mx-5 in the past and everyone keeps saying how fun it is to drive but it just doesn't appeal to me in the looks department.

Any other suggestions?

Get an MX5 or something - 325i Sport is heavily scene taxed, you'll pay £4k for a grotty old 20 year old 3 series which will be a nightmare to keep running, and the A6 is like a 5 Series only really dull and boring to drive.

Cheap MX5 = fun and not fast.

Also consider the E30 318iS - better on juice, cheaper to buy, generally in better condition and not that much slower than a 325i :)

I'm not that bothered about the performance of the E30 i just love the way they look. I just can't see me getting out of a MX-5 although it might be a great performing car on the road.
