Apologies if this is in the wrong forum, but this is a picture of what I'll be moving into next year http://i.imgur.com/obyHWYGh.jpg

I'll be saving a lot of money and will stay there for 2-3 years. It's my first rented ACCOMODATION.

Can anyone suggest how I could make this look anything similar to the EPIC dreamworthy setups I've seen today.

Re: my rig, I'm more of a programmer now so don't think I'll upgrade my GPU (290x) for a while. May add more panels (Samsung 27" IPS) or get a 34" gsync (will decide later).

Baring in mind I won't be able to remove furniture, only add to it.

So anyway, if any of you designers out there have a keen eye and can lend me a hand, please do!

Personally if it was myself I'd probably stick the bed where the chair is and use the entire back wall/corner for your PC area but I guess it all depends on your needs. Aesthetic wise I guess that's on you; I don't know if you can paint retnted accomodation. If not looks like you'll have white walls which you could either go with neutral pale tones and ambient LED lighting etc which seems to be popular or something more monochrome which is what I'd personally go for.

Probably be way easier to figure out when you actually move in there and get a sense for how big it is and where everything will fit.

Also, can you get rid of the fire?

I understand the aesthetic look for people.. But really they just take up an entire wall..

Hey buddy, no floor plan - is this something I can reasonably ask the landlord? I'll have to do it through the agency we go with.

Re; the fireplace, highly doubt landlord will spend money removing something they could just ignore, especially when the tenants are students (we're pretty much like cattle). Has this ever worked for you?

I like this idea, it was my first thought when entering the room, as the fireplace divides the wall for no reason.

The actual room is rather large. I've visited it and although it could be tweaked, the low price, the size and the location, I had to take it.

What desks would be ample for this room size? Also where could I look at for high quality wallpaper prints?

Well one looks straight from Ikea with a few strips of LEDs
With 5L of white emulsion and 100 quid you should easily be able to achieve some of these.

a lot of cleaning up though :P

Yeah, I know what you mean - like I said, I'm not looking for anything complicated, just wanted some creative ideas on how to reformat the room for a decent desk.

Is IKEA a good place to find walnut desks? I can't find many. The wallmounted speakers, and monitor is awesome and I do like the look of wood as well.

Where could I go for high quality prints like that? It's a clean and nice poster. Obviously, could subsitute wall mounted speakers for floorstanders if my landlord won't allow it.

Things like these are what I want printed - http://www.facets.la/wallpaper/W_2014_358.jpg http://www.facets.la/wallpaper/W_2014_363.jpg http://www.facets.la/wallpaper/W_2014_354.jpg

Its not walnut, like you said but they might have something darker.

Ikea furniture is reallllly cheap and i doubt it will physically last much longer than the time you live there :P

Also look at kitchen worksurfaces... You can cut them down to side and use the legs from the Ikea desk range instead.

I dont work for ikea btw... its just cost effective.

As for the actual room design. Not even my area of expertise

Move bed to corner so you don't fall off it when drunk.

get large desk along other wall for pc and all the work you will be doing.

and have fun.

Also some advice, Work hard on the uni content. It may seem boring but its worth it when you get a good grade.

i got a walnut "karlby" kitchen worktop from ikea, it's solid as a rock, just put some legs on it or use the "Alex" drawer and cupboard storage units to go under it for legs

Worktop http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/products/...cessories/karlby-worktop-walnut-art-30335191/

Storage unit http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/products/desks/table-tops-legs/alex-storage-unit-white-art-60192826/

Drawer unit http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/products/...cabinets/alex-drawer-unit-white-art-10192824/

also much easier to take apart than a standard desk for when you move out again as it isn't awkwardly screwed together, just pick the worktop up off the top and then you're left with 2 small units to throw in a van :D

I would start with blinds and thicker curtains.

Get rid of that Ikea cheap chair in the corner they are horrendous, am sitting on one now.

TV over the fireplace, get a double bed for frisky adventures, get shut of the light shade on a wire. Get something that will spread more light as it seems a large room with high ceilings.

A few tins of paint and some pictures and you good to go.

That's probably as far as you can go without landlords permission.

Thanks for the tip, and especially for the advice. I definitely need to get studying habits in order tho.

This is what I've been thinking:

Centre the bed alongside the west wall so its under the windows and theres enough space on the left of the fireplace for another wardrobe or some storage space thing.

Desk - Linnom/adils ikea - http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/products/...n-adils-table-black-brown-black-spr-49001965/

Wardrobe for left side of fire place - http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/products/...ardrobe-dark-brown-mirror-glass-art-90308788/

Walnut blinds - http://www.blinds-2go.co.uk/wooden-...2F3aEZ2c0rqkILI6qGq_udZsRl73UKRcqDRoCb4fw_wcB

Some A3 artwork framed in walnut

and like 3 plants or something to go on the top shelf of the bookshelf (to the right of the pic)

How do you go about installing blinds, replacing curtains, or the lighting fixture? Just call someone in?

Roughly wanting to spend 3-500 on getting it to look nice, as I'll be staying in it for 3-4 years so it's a worthwhile investment for me.

That's a genius idea. IKEA don't have any worktops I like although the walnut you have isn't too bad. I think going for a comprimise desk like the one I've listed is pretty much the same as the feet are easy to install/uninstall.

how has no one mentioned the watermark on the photo...

STUD-LETS?!? haha do you have to be a legendary swordsman to get a lease?!

What do you mean by that? I visited the place and found it a really good size, vastly bigger than what the picture makes it seem to be (for example the bed is a double and quite big but it looks small on the photograph).

I would start with blinds and thicker curtains.

Yeah, already with you on that one. I have a steelcase leap chair (super comfy) that I'll just take with me to the that house. Re the blinds and curtains, how much approx would it cost to install one of those?

There is already a double bed. The pic makes the room seem smaller than it is but for example it is quite a distance to get to the left side of the fireplace (although it looks really close to the door its not). Any recommendations for a good light?

Are you allowed to paint rented accommodation?

you dont need to involve landlord, it just requires a measuring tape and some pen and paper and 5minutes if that. just measure each wall and things like fireplace and put measurements on a diagram, without that people dont know for example what they can fit between fireplace and side wall in the recces.

don't forget to include the door and which way it opens and any windows in the drawing.

also included sizes of any furniture you got, which appears to be just the bed.
