Help me diagnose a problem please

:(, I spoke too soon. It gave me the black screen again. I am using bsodviewer and it doesn't have anything in the log.

I'm wondering what else I can try now, I am assuming it's not the memory (since it was tested, and we have only 2 sticks in out of 8). I'm also guessing it's not the graphics card since we have tried two different ones. That really leaves the motherboard, CPU and PSU. The PSU is fairly new (the Corsair AX1200i), and I hope that isn't causing the problems. Is there anything I can to do test for that?

Ah, yes there is, and they look like the times when the screen has gone black. I can see 5 yesterday and to my eye they all look the same (Although, I don't know exactly what I am looking for).

Ok so I bought a brand new Asus Ranger motherboard and a new i5, and freshly installed windows. Memtest says the memory is fine, and I have tested 3 different graphics cards. I still get this problem :(.

I am sure that I can rule out:
- The motherboard and processor
- The graphics cards
- The memory
- Software problems (Unless a vendor is sending me a bad update via windows update, but I would imagine that would have been spotted by lots of people by now).

All I can think now is that it MUST be a bad PSU? If so, it's under warranty and can go back, but I don't want to send it back just to be told it's fine.

Is there anything else I can do? This problem has now already cost me a mini fortune, I was hoping that would fix it :(.

try turning off c7 power saving in the bios

some psu's cant supply the low wattage for c7 idle state

I wouldn't have thought id would still be doing it on a new board/cpu,could be psu but im guessing, doesnt leave much else

also what memory are you using and how much? is it from your old x58?

Using the same memory from the X58 with a new motherboard and CPU. I did a memtest which showed there were no problems with the memory though which is why I ruled it out. I'm currently only using 2 sticks from it, in dual channel.

After reinstalling everything, the problem is when playing games. I tried a 3dmark test and after around 30 to 40 seconds my whole screen went fuzzy, then it told me the graphics drivers crashed again. I can reproduce this when I run the test.

I can try changing the c7 power settings (i'm not sure exactly what they are), but it's not when it's idle that it has the problem, it seems to be on load.

The PSU is a fairly new Corsair AX1200i

could be your memory aswell,x58 memory wont run aswell on z97 (didn't for me on z68) I needed a lot more dram v and imc voltage than I did with proper dual channel ram

idk if its xfire/driver related also

even if memory passes memtest if imc voltage isn't enough it will fail if stressed/gaming ect

if you've carried over psu/mem/gpu from old build it can only be one of those three

At the moment its only using the one graphics card.
I do have a tx650w I can test with but I need to reclaim it from a friend.

However, something very interesting just happened. I decided to unplug the power cables from the PSU and plug in a different pair (They were all plugged in at the PSU side because I did have 3 cards). I booted up and it has just been running 3dmark with no issues since my last post! Last time it died within a minute.

I am feeling rather hopeful, but if that does fix it I then need to test if its the cable or socket on the psu side which is the problem. I'll keep testing though.

I'm going from sad to happy to distraught each time it does this though so I'll try not to get my hopes up too much yet.

Edit: it finished the benchmark with no problems. I'm not sure if I really want to try swapping the cable back to the other one from the PSU..

Not had time to read the thread, but i'd suggest it's either..

PSU doesn't have enough juice.
Motherboard has flaky bios, are you on latest?
Graphics card is either faulty or doesn't like current drivers.
The connection you use is at fault, try another screen and/or cable.

Thanks, to consider each of these:
It's a 1200w Corsair PSU and it only has one r9 290 in, 2 hard drives, an ssd and an i5. Nothing is overclocked.

Motherboard has been replaced, and the processor has been replaced. It's all up to sate.

Windows has been totally reinstalled, can't be drivers.

I've tried changing the connection, and sadly the problem has continued today :(.

I've also tried 3 different graphics cards (All r9 290s).

I'm at a loss.

Have you tested an alternate PSU though? (sorry if this was mentioned)

Not likely either of those then.

Windows has been totally reinstalled, can't be drivers.

It can be if you installed the same version of the drivers again(or some of the same), you'd simply be recreating the same issue.

Not likely then, process of elimination though.. :)
