Help me enjoy wine (red!).

Actually got a bottle of that in the house already! :D

Get it cracked open. As I really rough rule most people will like a merlot. Its generally liked by most red drinkers.

Clearly thats a rough rule of thumb. I don't profess to be an expert. Just speaking from my experience of drinking the stuff.

Let us know how you get on :)

I don't like the stuff either.. I find it too heavy and bitter. I drink it when I'm drunk though, when I can't taste it :p But ohhh the hangover from drinking red!
I don't mind some whites, and I usually like whatever rose.

How about finding the qualities you like in Whisky and then looking for similar wines?

I'm a big fan of Vanilla style rums and i've always liked Red Wines with hints of Vanilla. Perhaps you could do similar? As a cheaper option to Chateauneuf De Pape, Waitrose do one call Chat Eu Neuf (means Cat on egg) which is very similar tasting and can be had around £6 a bottle :)

The Campo Viejo Riojas are also very nice and easy going i find.

I usually say throw out the French wines first, I know little about them and there's too many to get a grip on what's good and what's not, unless you've got the money to explore it properly.

Italian wines are fantastic, and imparticular, my favourite are Scicilian reds. Try anything by Cusumano, they're fantastic.
