Help me figure out if my disc is bad - Will I get it refunded?

Sata 2tb drive is 6 months old.
Recently (last 30 days) 5 games have refused to load.
Epic Launcher
Bethesda Launcher
Few games within Steam files did not verify (200 files for one game)

So far, uninstalling and reinstalling is fixing problems.
- Step stopped downloading wreckfest (when it determined files needed to be redownloaded) and a message appeared below the downloaded data in steam, saying "CORRUPT DISC"
- Epic launcher gave me

Games/Launcher/Engine/Binaries/Win64/VCRUNTIME140.dll is either not designed to fun on windows or contains an error, try installing again.... error status 0xc000012f

I could not open JPG images using the default program paint 6 months ago, iages would occassionally take 30 seconds to load. I solved this problem by assigning something else to open jpgs, not happy load times were ridiculouslyt long and timing out. Only for .jpg images mind you. Games back then all loaded fine.

How do I determine if there have ever been any bad sectors on my hard drive? Can someone help me figure out if the numerous games across various launchers all having corrupt data is connected to the HD integrity, please. Id like to get a refund on the drive and go SSD if I can proove the drive has had problems.

Download the manufacturer's diagnostic and run it.

Try using a different SATA cable and SATA port.

I can't see you being entitled to return the drive for a refund, but the supplier may choose to be charitable. They'll probably want you to RMA it back to the manufacturer.

Im not especially knowlegable, but it doesnt feel like a bad cable. The reinstalling of games and verifying the integrity of game files, then re-downloading them, solves the games-failing-to-load problem.

- 5+ games
- on 3 seperate launchers.
- all this month.
- corrupt files or corrupt disc messages were the words given by/from the games/installers.
- reinstalling games gets them to work fine
- except in the instance where I had to try 4 times on steam to get a game to re-download some files, because each time it tried to re-download the files that failed to verify with good integrity, it stopped with the "corrupt disc" message. But eventually trying again and again to get the files to download I overcame this stumbling block and re-downloaded the files whose integrity was verified as needing to be downloaded again...were re-downloaded. It was stem that said "Corrupt disc"

and everything now works.
But why all the errors... I could order another sata cable, do you still think they errors came and went because of a sata cable?

Manufacturers disgnostic... its a 2TB SeaGate barracuda sata-III 7200 - Ive tried HD TUNE PRO which cant find bad sectors, but in my amateurish mind, I was wondering if CHKDSK fixes and removes traces of bad sectors, as I have a feeling that running in the background is normal windows process? Do you have a link to a tool I could use to check the disc and see if it needs to be replaced?

It's a Seagate drive so download their diagnostic (Seatools).

How are you able to 'feel' the state of a cable? Chances are the cable is fine, but trying different cables and ports is a basic diagnostic step.

Cables that im not manipulating and subjecting to physical maniupulation in real time, when left alone physically, have either failed or are working. Ive never experienced intermittently working cables (that I know of) unless im bending them to create a contact which allows them to work. I'll look into seatools and lifewife, thanks guys.

Guys, what happened with the crashes we saw at launch time. Were they resolved with software updates?
Ive found a EVGA RTX 3080 FTW3 ULTRA and am thinking of buying it from someone, and I never did establish exactly what the issue was at launch, with cards not working, which line they were, and what caused the problems.
Safe to go ahead and buy the EVGA RTX 3080 FTW3 ULTRA?
