In my machine I have a Corsair RM850, I just had a 7900 XTX GPU turn up and I need an extra pcie 6+2pin cable, I have one with a brand name I have no idea what it is, could be EVGA, CIT or Corsair, sat in a drawer but google says no, bad TJ don't mix those cables or things go bang. So I didn't. I've looked for the box and I have every other box but the PSU box, I checked the cupboard twice, 45+ minutes apart and banged my head on the TV above it, twice so here I am asking for some help.

Two questions:

1) How do I know exactly which cable is suitable to replace it? What information would I(you) need to help me work it out?

Information:
SKU: CP-9020196-UK
Model: Corsair RM850, bought in Jan 2022.
Looks like this, this is from a dead link from the site I got it from so it should be this exact one, it's what it looks like in my case.

2) I have an RM1000x (2024) turning up in the next few days, from what I can see the cables have a "type" and I was wondering if I could just steal one of these cables but I'd need to know if they are both the same type and/or if this is a bad idea.

Otherwise this new GPU is going to sit in a box until AMD grace OCUK with new CPU stock sometime in January and that is going to entirely burn a hole in my FPS pocket and I can't have that.

Any help appreiciated!

Have a look at corsairs compatibility chart
It's most likely type 3 or type 4
As far as I remember the only difference between 3 and 4
Is the 24 pin cable has different pin outs
All the others are the same
Though yes you need to be 100% certain they're interchangeable
So don't rely on my memory

Compatibility chart

I looked at that but it doesn't list the RM1000x (2024) at the moment, I've sent corsair a support ticket so we'll see but good to know that it might just be the 24pin thats different

Latest one might even be type 5
It's always amazed me there's no industry standard
For the psu cable pin outs

So you definitely did the right thing
By being very cautious
Hopefully corsair get back to you quickly with the answer

I appreiciate the reply regardless though, I can see myself just taking this 850 out and putting the 1000 in as it's gunna be a good 6-8 weeks before I see the new CPU anyway and that'll bug the hell outta me having it sat behind me like it is.

If I get any reply on this from corsair I'll update for anyone in the future, if it was just the PSU that would pop I'd give it a go but it's likely going to pop more than that

Does seem to be type 4 on the rm1000x
So yeah i think they are interchangeable though
Not 100% certain on the 24 pin
On the rm850 as vaguely think there may have been
2 revisions of it

I've got the SKU in the main post but I think without taking it out, I won't be able to see the stuff on the relevant side to see which revision it is and I'm going to guess that one uses a diff type to the other

If you have the time anyway
Might as well just fully remove the old one
Including the cables
And put the rm1000x in with all its new cables
Bit of a PITA but you can probably do it faster than
Corsair will take to reply to you

Yeah I'll likely do that, I've ordered a new case so I was hoping to just get the majority of things built into it including the PSU though but it's a small price to pay

Got a response:

"Thank you for your patience. The cables from your RM850 (CP-9020196-UK) will not work on the RM1000X with SKU (CP-9020271-UK) as the RM1000X you provided the part number for uses Type-5 cables. Which have a smaller connection on the end that goes into the Power Supply, not allowing for other cables to fit. Please feel free to reach out if you have any additional questions."

Looks like we'll be putting the new PSU into my old rig to get this XTX to work then and then taking it out when it's time to swap things over! Bit of a pain as I'd like to get all the cable management done prior to the CPU being here but guess we'll make a day of it.

And yet on their own product page, the tech spec says Type 4 cables.

Don't want to link as they sell the components and not sure if i'm allowed.

If the plugs are the same size but the pinout is different, as you imply you already have a good 6+2 then you could check the pinout of your current 6+2 with a multimeter, de-pin one of the connectors on the unknown cable and re-pin it to give the same pinout of good one.

All pics of the PSU (below the modular sockets) show that it says Type 4 cables.

Be interesting to see who is right.
Yeah I looked on the official site for these pictures and this picture is the one thats missing, the ones that do show it have writing right over the "number" for the type annoyingly, in some other places it uses this picture but again on the official product listing it says "Type 5". It'll arrive on Thursday and I'll post a picture of what it says on the bottom of it and the manual ect that comes with it, wouldn't be suprised if it's got some surplus previous version plates on it.

I'm entirely all for testing but I find myself in this position all the time for niche jobs like this, where the cost of the tools is a large part of just buying the finished product outright, however I will just compare the cables and see if there is any noticeable difference plus checking the back plate but a good idea regardless

Yeah, I had a multimeter handy and a couple of staples which worked well as a de-pinning tool. I wanted flat ribbon cables to run from the GPU to the PSU and the PSU manufacturer didn't make them.

Back of the PSU physically says type 4, manual says something about the 24pin.

By all accounts the cable just shouldn't fit if it is a type 5. I'm torn on what to do, tempted to just swap the psu out
