In my machine I have a Corsair RM850, I just had a 7900 XTX GPU turn up and I need an extra pcie 6+2pin cable, I have one with a brand name I have no idea what it is, could be EVGA, CIT or Corsair, sat in a drawer but google says no, bad TJ don't mix those cables or things go bang. So I didn't. I've looked for the box and I have every other box but the PSU box, I checked the cupboard twice, 45+ minutes apart and banged my head on the TV above it, twice so here I am asking for some help.

Two questions:

1) How do I know exactly which cable is suitable to replace it? What information would I(you) need to help me work it out?

Information:
SKU: CP-9020196-UK
Model: Corsair RM850, bought in Jan 2022.
Looks like this, this is from a dead link from the site I got it from so it should be this exact one, it's what it looks like in my case.

2) I have an RM1000x (2024) turning up in the next few days, from what I can see the cables have a "type" and I was wondering if I could just steal one of these cables but I'd need to know if they are both the same type and/or if this is a bad idea.

Otherwise this new GPU is going to sit in a box until AMD grace OCUK with new CPU stock sometime in January and that is going to entirely burn a hole in my FPS pocket and I can't have that.

Any help appreiciated!

I looked at that but it doesn't list the RM1000x (2024) at the moment, I've sent corsair a support ticket so we'll see but good to know that it might just be the 24pin thats different

I appreiciate the reply regardless though, I can see myself just taking this 850 out and putting the 1000 in as it's gunna be a good 6-8 weeks before I see the new CPU anyway and that'll bug the hell outta me having it sat behind me like it is.

If I get any reply on this from corsair I'll update for anyone in the future, if it was just the PSU that would pop I'd give it a go but it's likely going to pop more than that

I've got the SKU in the main post but I think without taking it out, I won't be able to see the stuff on the relevant side to see which revision it is and I'm going to guess that one uses a diff type to the other

Yeah I'll likely do that, I've ordered a new case so I was hoping to just get the majority of things built into it including the PSU though but it's a small price to pay

Got a response:

"Thank you for your patience. The cables from your RM850 (CP-9020196-UK) will not work on the RM1000X with SKU (CP-9020271-UK) as the RM1000X you provided the part number for uses Type-5 cables. Which have a smaller connection on the end that goes into the Power Supply, not allowing for other cables to fit. Please feel free to reach out if you have any additional questions."

Looks like we'll be putting the new PSU into my old rig to get this XTX to work then and then taking it out when it's time to swap things over! Bit of a pain as I'd like to get all the cable management done prior to the CPU being here but guess we'll make a day of it.

All pics of the PSU (below the modular sockets) show that it says Type 4 cables.

Be interesting to see who is right.
Yeah I looked on the official site for these pictures and this picture is the one thats missing, the ones that do show it have writing right over the "number" for the type annoyingly, in some other places it uses this picture but again on the official product listing it says "Type 5". It'll arrive on Thursday and I'll post a picture of what it says on the bottom of it and the manual ect that comes with it, wouldn't be suprised if it's got some surplus previous version plates on it.

If the plugs are the same size but the pinout is different, as you imply you already have a good 6+2 then you could check the pinout of your current 6+2 with a multimeter, de-pin one of the connectors on the unknown cable and re-pin it to give the same pinout of good one.
I'm entirely all for testing but I find myself in this position all the time for niche jobs like this, where the cost of the tools is a large part of just buying the finished product outright, however I will just compare the cables and see if there is any noticeable difference plus checking the back plate but a good idea regardless

Back of the PSU physically says type 4, manual says something about the 24pin.

By all accounts the cable just shouldn't fit if it is a type 5. I'm torn on what to do, tempted to just swap the psu out

Sooo, lemme guess that right, Corsair by email say it is type 5, in their press release they say type 4 AND the rear of the PSU says type 4?

Yikes.
Yeah and even on the website product page it says it's a type 5 if you follow the SKU through google "CP-9020271-UK"

By all accounts if it's not a type 5 cable it shouldn't even fit though

Clearly says type 4 on that photo
So All the cables should be interchangeable
Except possibly the 24 pin

Pretty sure i just swapped the psu
And left all my cables in place
Except for the 24 pin
When I changed 860axi to hx850i
Think that was type 3 for the axi and type 4
For the hxi
All this hassle because corsair don't make the psus
So sometimes they use a different manufacturer

Though my build uses just about every cable possible
So not a quick job to do a full rewire All the cables
If its a relatively easy build
Just do a full swap psu and cables
That way it's 100% guaranteed to be OK
Even though I think they are interchangeable other than maybe 24 pin
Its all the conflicting information, on their website, from the Corsair support to it not being in their compatibility table.

Then on the back of the physical unit it says type4.

Part of me thinks we'll if i had this already I probably would have just swapped them in but pre planning has made me cautious lol

Jan 2022 will be a type 4. The type 5's are very new.

I have a ton of them if you want one.

I have been buying their PSU's for years. I have a big box full of unused type 4's.

My guess is that they are saying type 5 because the type 5 PCIe are the same as the type 4. They have a chart somewhere that shows what actually changed for each type and mostly it was only one lead. That's only a guess, but anyway, go by what is on the back of the PSU.
That's nice of you to offer thanks, the new PSU arrived today and has four of the pcie cables anyway and I only need the three so the idea was to steal one in the mean time rather than swap all the PSUs in and out but was trying to work out who was right and who was wrong lol

Type 5 won't physically fit in type 4 psu anyway
Personally I think their support is mixing up type 5
With pcie 5 hpwr cable
If its 2024 psu I would expect it to have one of those
Not just their support but the listing on their actual website is wrong too!

That's kinda what I was counting on, type 5 not fitting. I'll be able to check tomorrow

Alright just to update, I've tried one of the cables from the RM1000x and replaced one of the cables currently in the 3070. It went bang.

No I kid, it's worked fine so I'm gunna swap my XTX in now after a night shift :-)

Got there in the end up :)
Didn't hurt to be extra careful though
Expensive bits of hardware aren't something you want
To go bang
Night of gaming ahead, we'll see how it plays out but yeah we got there.

100% appreiciate any and all input from folks here, I'll update this thread again if Corsair support get back to me again.

Saved me a job of switching the new PSU in and out, can get it all nice and shiny ready for when santa says I can have my 9800x3d or whoever is deciding
