Ok my 10 year old 2l mondeo is dieing quite quickly and guzzles petrol.

I have 7k to spend with most places I've spoken with offering 1k for the mondy so 8 in total.

I suck and finding cars on the net so would like some help please guys.

Whats the best out there atm?

oh an I'm thinking diesel as I travel 60 miles a day and travel from Cornwall to Hampshire fairly regularly.

cheers guys.

to get a good beamer or audi in my price range with a few toys will have to be old to get it in my price bracket.

hmm I hate buying cars its never easy and I dont want to end up with a duffer for the next 5 years.

But you will have those coveted logos...

Seriously speaking though, you will do roughly 22k a year, so a diesel is the route to go if you want better economy. I would recommend a Civic or an Accord 2.2 ctdi.

But modern diesels are riddled with problems.

How about an E60 5 series 525d?

Rubbish used car unless you really want a BMW which given he's said he's after a Focus I very much doubt he does. He could be in a Focus thats just a few years old for his budget, whereas a 525d will be considerably older, less reliable and more expensive to own.

Why would you suggest a large BMW executive car to somebody after a Focus? And the 525d specifically, what an odd model to pick to recommend.

You can pick up an 08 plate for 6K and why are they rubbish?
Obviously a 535d would be nice but the 520d/525d is economical.

Jesus it was just a suggestion, sorry if I offended people.

You cannot pick up an 08 plate 525d for £6k that isn't riddled with issues or has questionable history. £6k buys you 2003-2005ish prefacelift cars which are likely to be tatty and/or generally just old. The E60 doesn't hide age and mileage well.

He is after a reasonably new, inexpensive to own and run small family car, hence his suggestion of a Focus. A 5 Series BMW with the costs associated with that are quite obviously not what he's after.

The 525d is a 6 cylinder unit just like the 530d, delivering identical economy but inferior performance. Therefore unless its a particularly good deal you buy a 520d for fuel economy and a 530d for 6 cylinder smoothness leaving the specific recommendation of a 525d an odd one.

I would look at a Civic or Accord in this price range, with the 2.2 diesel engine.
No DPF in that age civic/price range IIRC.

Then test drive a Mondeo equivalent and go from there. You may find the new mondeo is too big and want a focus more! if so then compare one with a Civic.

As someone mentioned an Avensis may be good value though.
