Help me find this WWII series..

the one I remembered wasnt a movie, it was more like a documentary showing the opinion from the side of hitler and nazi party, for sure controversial so got removed by youtube.

You weren't actually in WW2 in a previous life perhaps? :D

must have been! Problem stems back from when I was young. I interviewed Battle of Britain pilots with my dad and got the bug from there. Some of the stories were incredible. I grew up fascinated by the social history and then fairly recently completed my history degree which has only made matters worse for me.. I should be made to wear cords...

Was only aware of Generation War now I'm intrigued,

There was a Russian series about a group of female AA soldiers who get into a battle with a fallschirmjager unit? Called 'The Dawns Here Are Quiet", doesn't really fit the description though.

Wasn't 'The Man in the High Castle' was it?

I'll have a poke about...

*Edit not Tannbach is it? https://m.imdb.com/title/tt3658364/

That Russian series is good, I’ve seen it too. It’s not high castle, the series I’m on about must have been older, otherwise I’d remember.

I’ve seen Tannbach. Not that either.

During the late 1980's, I met Roger Hall DFC who was a Battle of Britain pilot - he wrote a book about the Battle of Britain of which I have a very old copy.

I also have a copy of A Boy in the Gulag by Jerzy Kmiecik, he was a 16 year old Polish schoolboy when war broke out. He escaped from the Germans, was arrested by the Russians, spent three years in the gulags, escaped and spent nine months on the run, got to the west and became a Spitfire and Mustang in the RAF for the final part of the war. He remained in the RAF until 1982 when he was the last WW2 pilot still flying in the RAF.

Just a thought, rather than a film or a series, could it have been a book you read that left particularly vivid memories?

That’s pretty special! I’d love to read a copy. My dad was working for 1 squadron when he got to meet the old boys. That’s where he decided to interview, I was only 15 at the time but between us managed to interview 24 pilots including aces and wives of pilots, plus bomber crew. It’s quite something. The best bit from my point of view is these are unique histories which have not seen the light of day. We have a large book of written memoirs plus photos and paraphernalia that I have been charged with now and some of the stories I’ve got are incredible. I’ve been trying to find a publisher but that’s another story entirely.

I really am not sure. My imagination is pretty crazy at the best of times but unless I was making it myself I’m sure it was series in colour... it might not even be German, it could be polish, or Korean, or Finnish. They’ve all produced quality series on the subject before.

There are two books available by Roger Hall: "Clouds of Fear" and "Spitfire Pilot" - I think they're the same book and that "Spitfire Pilot" is "Clouds of Fear" re-released after his death with a catchy title. His story is more about his depression after the Battle of Britain and there are better books available.

As an alternative book by a Battle of Britain pilot, these two by Arthur Donahue are highly recommended:
  • Tally Ho! (about the Battle of Britain)
  • Last Flight from Singapore
They are both available in a combined edition:
  • An American Fighter Pilot in the R.A.F (I bought this one last year - it's still available new)
He was killed in action action on 11 September 1942 when he was shot down over the English Channel - his body was never recovered.
The manuscripts for his books were found after his death in his room.

A Boy in the Gulag by Jerzy Kmiecik is out of print but can be found on a well known auction site for between £10 and £15 (there are two copies currently for sale at this moment)

Any series you recommend Phil? Seems we have a similar taste in WW2 on TV.

I've seen most of the mainstream stuff so looking for the more obscure.

I can recommend Colditz Series 1 (1972) and Colditz Series 2 (1974).
It's very British, stiff-upper-lip and all that - but enjoyable nonetheless.
I've also read all the books by Hauptmann Reinhold Eggers who was Security Officer at Colditz and also all the books by Airey Neave and Pat Reid who were both prisoners at Colditz.

In addition, I spent two days at Colditz last year - I did the full tour where we saw the French tunnel, the potato cellar where Pat Reid escaped from and went up into the top of the roof space to the actual spot where they built the Colditz glider.

Thanks to @Josh for mentioning 'The Dawns Here Are Quiet', finished watching it last night, enjoyed it.

Also, recently finished Season 1 of 'Das Boot', which was much better than I was expecting, fingers crossed that Season 2 can follow suit.

No drama, I think I found it after watching a Russian WW2 film on Amazon.

Seems they have a good selection of Russan/Eastern European ww2 films/series.
