Ok new thread.

Looking for something to use to commute to work 18 miles a day and to have some fun with on country lanes etc

Not too worried about practicalities but needs to be reliable and un tinkered with

Ideas so far

Mondeo st220
Clio 182
Civic type R
Fiat coupe
Evo
Skyline gt-t r33

First three are what I expect to get. The last three are just ideas but I don't think I'll get a reliable/untinkered one and the wife would hate them.

Not rushing and will probably look at changing within the next 6 months.

Open to other sugestions

Mx5 is not my style

Dc2 falls into the second half of the list but worth a look

Like the idea of a 3l x-type. I'll look at them

Hi fox. You abused my new tiguan on lease now I'm actualy after a car for cash!

Wife has the tractor and I have an 04 2.0 zetec focus

I need some stimulation!

Toyota Soarer?

Pretty darn bullet proof reliability wise and there are a number of standard examples out there, especially if you choose to opt for luxury gather than out and out speed and get a V8 instead of the TT. You might have a problem if you want a Manual though, although TT manuals do exist and are available for your budget I'd be seriously surprised if you managed to find a standard example.

Fiat Coupe isnt exactly new though is it.

Skyline R33 again just as old as a 5k MR2.

Very true I would have loved an mr2 about 5 years ago. The fiats go up to about 1999 which is about my limit

The skyline would be impossible to find so forget that too

So down to

St220
182
Type R
3.0 X-type
Integra

I can't really take a thread seriously where a Jaguar X-Type 3.0 Auto and an Honda Integra Type R are on the shortlist. How does that even happen?

They are both polar opposites. Everything about the Jag would be hated by a Type R Fan. Everything about a Type R would be unacceptable to somebody who would buy the Jag.

Civic Type-R looks like the obvious choice to me. Probably the quickest you've listed, plenty of fun to drive, great residuals and about as reliable as hot hatches come.

Split those down into the 2 types of cars youve got there - relatively small, revvy, chuckable things (182, civic, teg) and larger performance saloons/hatches (jag and Mondeo) - which type appeals more?

You can get 1999 Soarers as well!

Price is a bit rich though. There was another late car (think it might have been a V Plate) for around £3500, which is about right.

But to be honest, once you start factoring in age into your requirement, you're looking to fail. There are reasons why quick cars for £5,000 actually cost £5000 - It's because they are either crap, unreliable or old. You will find very, very few exceptions.

If the letter/number on the registration plate and absolute reliability are this important to you, do yourself a favour and start looking for other types of car.
