Hi all,

Took this hd out an old pc and not sure how I can use it. Its a Seagate Cheetah ULTRA 160 SCSI DRIVE. Model no: ( ST336607LW), PART NO: ( 9V4005-038).

I currently have an IDE HD in my pc, and was wondering if scsi is any different, because I would like to put it in my pc. I googled a little and found the ULTRA 320 version which is 40gb. But i cannot find any info on the ULTRA 160 version.

Heres some pics:

thanks

Can this be connected easily in pc with IDE, just like a normal HD?
No, it's a SCSI drive and therefore needs a SCSI controller, cable, terminator etc.

While it was a fast drive in it's day it's not going to set the world alight today. The performance will be about on a par with a 36Gb Raptor.

You need a SCSI Ultra 160 controller. Looking at around £90 for Adaptec SCSI controller. Be careful of PCI connector though, I think some of those cards are PCI-X (64bit)

Most of the PCI-X cards will run in a 32bit slot, the alternative is the Adaptec 29320 which is a PCIe 1x card. You are, however, still looking at over £100 for it.

The one thing to watch out for are OEM cards which seem good value but don't tend to come with cables which are expensive if you buy them separately.

EDIT: When I say a PCI-X card will run in a 32bit slot you still have to be careful that it will do so without fouling anything else on the board. There looks to be a big heatsink behind the PCI slots on that Biostar board which may rule out the use of a 64bit card.
