Help me identify this bird...

Hi all,

I didn't manage to get a picture of it as it flew off before I got close enough, but this morning I saw this absolutely huge bird perched on the railings by a small stream I drive past on the way to work.

It was a big fat grey bird with a red bit on it's face. When I say big, it was so big that I was like what the hell is that!!

An old man walked past it and it was about the size of his torso.

I have no idea what it was, but I'm in the UK and I've never seen one before. Is kind of smooth like a pidgeon with no markings, but MASSIVE.

Any ideas?

Turkey
Heron
Goose
Toucan (thanks Deific)
Owl


I don't think it was a bird of prey but I really don't know.

I saw the lesser common Red Tit yesterday whilst walking home. Someone must have been out in the sun too long.

Sounds like a Grey Heron to me, although they tend to have yellow beaks and not red. I live in Bucks and they're quite common around the canals and reservoirs.
