i an looking to upgrade my ddr2 system to a full atx ddr3 system, don't need or want x-fire and i want a mobo with core unlocker, and i want it full atx. this is for gaming i want it to look cool and the max budget is around £80 for the mobo, and around £40 for the ram, is the xms3 any good or should i go for something like the vengeance?

thanks for your info, the only problem i have is that my power supply does not have an 8-pin connector, but it does have 2 x 4-pin connectors as well as the pcie 6pin supply. can i use these 2 4-pin leads to power the mobo? if not i am seriously looking at the ASUS M4A87TD EVO.

Why ? OP specifically says they're not interested in Dual-GPU, more PCI-E lanes is the main extra thing the 990 offers over 970.
What else, extra little bit of OC potential ? most AMD setups are going to be overclocked via mutliplier if at all, mid -range boards can cope with this easy and have the circuitry to handle it.

It has ALWAYS been possible to get a decent board for £50 - £80 for most platforms, depending on how new they are.

I'm not saying the board you linked is bad, far from it, but necessary ?

You can use a 4pin connector in the 8pin slot if you fit it to the right 4 pins.
In exactly the same way, you can connect an 8 pin to the correct 4 pins of a 4pin and let the extra overhang.
Both are 'kosher' ways of doing things, as it were.
It's only in cases of heavy overclocking + overvolting that you might get extra stabilityfrom an 8 pin.

Also if you have 2 X 4pins that clip together, that IS an 8 pin, they just have it in 2 seperate parts for flexibility so it can easily be used for the 4pin

Thanks for your assistance, and i may just be a little dumb with this question, but i think i only want a 70 series chipset, but what will the 970 offer me that the 870 wont?

ok, found this 1 out myself. for future proofing im better off getting the 970 over the 870 purely for the 8+ cores on bulldozer when its released. which is a realistic upgrade from my 550. however. what 970 mobo comes with UEFI bios and core unlocking except ASUS M5A97? again, for around the £80-£90 mark
