So basically my parents want me to add some form of wireless to the seup they have (see below)

Now I'd quite like them to keep the wired connection to the PC upstairs somehow whilst adding in a wireless router.

The ancient virgin modem box only has one out which is the cable that goes upstairs so im kinda stuck on a cheap easy solution.

Does anyone have any ideas what I could do?

I hope that makes sense :D

Yep, get a router (preferable NETGEAR) that is supported by the Modem and has good reviews and is a decent price to you.

As above, get a wireless router, and put the 1 network cable from your crappy old VM modem, into that router, that then gives you WiFi and still a cabled solution to the PC :)

Speak to Virgin, I assume that is you ISP? tell them you still have one of the old model routers and they should send you a new, wifi enabled modem/router.

Though you'll get a superhub and then you'll spend the rest of your days troubleshooting your parents crap wireless.

Do they have a budget in mind for this? As we could obviously recommend anything up to several hundred pounds.
